You're not "allowed" anything. You accepted a job offer.
Sick calls aren't a schedule management tool. They're safety related.
You call in sick when you're sick.
Period. Paid or unpaid.
Why is this so difficult to understand?
(To ask the question is to answer it. The internet is not anonymous.)

Kid not well? Sick call. No qualms.
I’m probably wrong about your insinuation here but a sick call is perfectly valid anytime you are unfit to fly.

This advice is not in line with the pwa unless you are based where you have access to a state sick program that gives kin care benefits. Sick leave is for a personal medical condition, physical or mental. Are there circumstances where your kid can cause that? Sure, accident, major medical diagnosis, etc. If your kid has a cold, that is not mentally medically disqualifying for the parents.

what if that Cold kept you up at night and/or you are worried about said child? Sounds like part of IMSAFE… i wouldn’t classify a certain medical condition over another as to the severity of it as it can vary per person. A head cold to one parent or child can be different for another family. Point is, if you aren’t safe to fly don’t come to work, call out sick. That’s what it is there for. The last thing you need is to be sitting across from people at the big table explaining why XYZ occurred, and I guarantee you the company won’t have your back and will defend their own with “well we provide them with 169 hours of sick if they weren’t able to fly that is an option to use”.

But the PWA defines sickness as a personal medical condition. Every pilot is the final authority on when they are able to exercise the privileges of their medical certificate. If you determine that your family members common cold causes you sufficient stress to fail IMSAFE, call in sick, but be prepared to explain that to your CPO and get a doctors note for it if required.

I also wonder how the PR angle would affect customers. As much as safety is a part of our marketing strategy would Delta tell a customer that they have a rigorous process that requires pilots prove they are not fit to fly. And that there is evidence that the policy results in pilots flying when they should not and is at odds with FAA guidelines on self evaluation.

Two possible reasons that you are currently not medically qualified (read: sick) to fly due to a sick child.

What company do you work for? We don’t have to explain anything to the CPO. If they need a sick note, you don’t need to provide specific details. Just get a doctor to write a note explaining that you are not fit to fly. There is no need to go into details about the stress of getting your kid to the doctor then waiting for our crappy health insurance to get a prescription filled.
