I do know they got the rule changed to board “any time once passenger boarding has begun” in line with the new C19 provision that we got.
they did that anyway before C19

Are we seriously not going to talk about this new captain leadership recurrent training. 2 days in ATL to tour the OCC, have Flt ops feed us koolaide and then, my living hell, listen to other captains tell “how you did it.”

I hated in person recurrent, listening about crazy scenarios that they miraculously handled perfectly, you know, just food for thought. And every captain has to attend once every 5 years. I’d rather do an extra sim event. We have great stuff in the topics of interest, the safety magazine, and the QCQ hot topics, what PTC group think dreamed this up?

They served a snickers to everyone and the metric was good. Clearly, forcing them to eat more snickers will make the metrics even better.

I have no opinion on this new captain leadership course, as it was just announced. However I don't see in person discussions in the negative light that you do. If it is just a bunch of wannabe sky heroes recounting their exploits, then yes, it is all a bit much. However I have found that you can get a whole lot of positive info from real discussions with real pilots vs the LMS stuff (and yes there is a lot of good info in various places). I never "hated" the in person day of CQ. One year we actually had some ATL controllers do a presentation. Very good, and impossible to replicate with some LMS module.

I chuckle that you say "what PTC group dreamed this up." Other pilots were saying the exact same thing years ago--when we got RID of the in person day of CQ.

Yeah, whoa, easy up there! Not at you Herk, but the OP of that comment. In person is always better for learning and good discussions than CBTs and pays better too. I still remember some of the good "closed door" discussions during in-person CQ at my first airline and those were 10+ years ago.

If it requires any more time on VA Ave., I'm generally against it. I'll keep an open mind as it could be valuable training, but I won't hold my breath on that.

I wonder how much of it is charm school for captains that think being an A-hole is a leadership trait.

If you live in ATL it's not a bad deal. 10hrs of pay and you can stack it with reserve days in a way to make you more difficult to use. I did the initial DCLC during upgrade and found it to be generally useful. Yes there were a few eye rolling company koolaid moments but most of the discussions were quite good. I enjoyed being able to ask questions to the management people from the OCC, IFS, and even Chuck S. who came to give a presentation. Even the WWYD discussions are a way to get different perspectives on how to handle situations, and at the very least read between the lines of the facilitators' discussions and get an idea of the general company stance on that situation. Of course if you have a good reason to, resolve it however you like, but knowing where the company stands is a good reference point.

Totally fair to withhold judgement till more is known. And in general I don’t have a problem with the first time upgrade “leadership” course. But looking at the horizon of doing this course every 5 years for 20+ years how much new info is going to be taught on “setting the tone.” If as a captain, in five years of this gig, you haven’t found a way to set a tone that your crew can perform in, a two day story time and company koolaide session is not going to help.

I find sims and line checks that naturally become tailored to me are very useful, I’m not hating on in person training. And I would probably dislike it less if it wasn’t going to force us all to travel to VA Ave, I think that’s the kick in the shorts too far for me.
