Peer pressure would have been meeting early for drinks at the hotel bar, which I almost never did. I never felt pressured or side-eyed for it.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I read HK’s comments as coming from multiple observations, not just ‘getting ditched’ for a computer game. It was an accumulation of things. Ask around, WB crews are way more relaxed on the whole.

Agree with above, I never once felt pressured to do anything on a layover. Then again, I was always down to go out and about with the crew. I'm generally extroverted/social person and I found going out with the crew is what made international layovers so much fun. Sometimes I'd roll on my own, never heard a word other than what did you get into on the layover.
I never avoided a Captain because i was never going to let someone dictate what trips I flew. So I'd never let something ridiculous like perceived peer pressure, keep me from bidding a seat.

On one of my first WB trips, the captain went to a Subway for dinner. I’ve had captains go to McDonalds before. I know pilots that go to Denny’s instead of the hotel breakfast in HND to save $5. I don’t know why this is a generational argument.
I don’t see the appeal to go eat dinner and have drinks at 4am body clock time. To then get a crap nights sleep before another craps night sleep. So, most the time I just bail. I’d rather go on a cool hike. Sometimes, I never leave the room because I have other stuff to do. I’m probably weird.
As for tipping, I really don’t know why we do it. I’m pretty sure they are tipped via contract in their home currency. I do it, but it’s more bc everyone else is. I’ve recently learned that is some places it’s very hard to exchange US dollars unless they are in perfect condition. Not a dirty wadded up $1.

As a Gen X'er that had spent a staggering amount of time gaming as a younger person, but has so little time to do it at home anymore due to parenthood and adulting.... layovers are my last bastion to enjoy one of my favorite pastimes. Granted this mostly takes place in the 'villes and the 'burgs

Finally got to experience my first Gen Z FO. Pretty rare in my fleet...
Didn't tip the bus driver....heck, even all the F/A's did and they make 1/16th of what he's pulling in. Offered to go to dinner. Declined - no biggie, but our language speaker had made reservations for all of us at a very cool, out of the way local place. It was fantastic BTW. All of us (minus 1) had a superb evening.
Met up for the van to head out and asked him if he did anything cool or interesting on the LAYO. He said he played video games.....ok, yeah, well..... Dude, life is too short, get out and enjoy it while still vertical.
