Now I understand. The ever cheerful Mr. Douglas liked smoking.

The way the rules are written, leaves it so open to abuse kind of makes it untenable.....guy get the interview, hired on, and never intending to fly till he's actually out of the mil. and secured a retirement, then comes back--bam--left seat on whatever he can hold. Maybe I'm missing something...

Well your scenario is a little unpredictable for a few reasons.....
First, you need a DD-214 (out of the military) to get hired in the first place.
Second, you would need the reserves to go from undermanned to wartime quickly thereby offering you the option to go back to active duty after joining the reserves.
Third, said when was the last time anyone at DAL could "hold the left seat on anything" after 5 years?
So getting out of the active duty with 5 years to go just to get hired and go back to the military is a tenuous proposition to say the least.
Most were Furloughed and scrambled for a few years just to try to find a niche that they may be able to return to active duty, far from a planned evolution.

Damnit 80. I pay him $100 a month to bash the 88. And frankly, he's about to get fired. Nobody is moving off.

Well, I hope I'm paying him a $100. It is an anonymous board and I just put the money in the V-File I thought was his.

Where that cargo door is on that 80, that'd been a nice place to put a 2L door and put the galley in the middle.

How we do 40 minute turns is bey... sigh... I can just sense Bar sees an opening.
