I'm telling you, career progression is way over rated. Why would anyone want to be based in Hawaii for a growing company flying a wide body international in and out of paradise. Who would trade a DC-9 in Minnesota, in Februgly, for that?
Now while the A330 is a much nicer aircraft, you have to consider the flying the HAL guys are doing. It likely involves all night flying over the Pacific, and if you walked around DTW observing our 744A's, you know what that does to a person. Not to mention the ridiculous cost of living in Hawaii. But it is beautiful country, and the product is great IMO. Just not as many options, or potential career earnings. |

BB: Hi, I'm Ignigo Montoya :) I'm the Detroit Chief Pilot :D FA: Wow, yours must be a large family. That guy over there is Ignigo Montoya and the other guy non rev'ing with a crew bag is also Mr. Montoya. He's the NYC Chief Pilot. What a coincidence. |

Well, there are advantages to the DC9. No FOQA to tell on you, you can't get in trouble for being off course, and you generally stay in the same time zone. :D

It's not a zero-sum game. Just because the HI pilots would get a big win doesn't mean we'd get an equally big loss. How hard is it on us to absorb 600 pilot scattered around our list when they bring 25 wide-bodies and a very complimentary route structure? As long as there are no fences, I don't see it as being that big of a deal.

Ya gotta watch the fence, I bid LA /1011 in '89 and got fenced out by 200 numbers, I know that sounds like ancient history, but the rules don't change much...

QUESTION:
Going forward to either HI or ALK - how are people looking at merging? Currently there are FNWA 2000 hires w/ FDAL 2007 directly above them. To merge DOH where would you go? Hopefully in the NWA mix as they are much more junior due to the SEN. Just thinkin' Baja. |
