Trip parking in its old form is not gone on the 777, it has just changed. The 777 uses an A and a B crew on each trip.
New Trip parking requires 3 pilots to do the swap. 3 friends, A, B, C: A and C are flying the same trip/destination. A puts a trip on B's line then a whiteslips and gets his trip. Now A gets C's trip and C gets A's old trip from B. Victory! Backslaps all around. Is this a fix? |

Dragon, Good post, well thought out. I don't agree with everything you posted but a good presentation. Remember your fellow Delta pilot is every bit as capable of independent thinking and contract analysis as you are and a majority of them voted for it, to imply otherwise is hypocritical. On the 777 everyday there were 2 or 3 reserves required and anywhere from 12 to 20 available. We had/have many reserves who flew zero to 1 trip a year ! We were way over manned and it had nothing to do with trip swapping which is now gone ( never did it but I know why it was done, pm me if you want details).
Thanks. I have to say I was going off anecdotal evidence about the trip swapping. As to being hypocritical, I thought about that but counter it with the number of folks I spoke to who had no idea what was in the contract (TA). They were either going off what ALPA recommended or what their friends were doing. They couldn't be bothered to do their own due diligence. Apathy, while not rampant does exist in our constituency. We all know folks who want nothing more than to show up, fly a trip and go home with as little fuss as possible. The other point I guess I should have made as members we need to do our own research, talk about it (like many did on the TA sub-forum) and ask numerous questions. Take a contrarian view and try to poke holes in our own theories. To the same end our reps need to represent us and not the company when it comes time to educate the membership. I've heard (again hearsay) that part of any deal is ALPA has to get it passed. |

Scambo, you lost me on that one, I was never good at word math but I think B gets screwed in your example and I don't think anybody is that good a friend, but I agree that somebody will figure out how to scam the system. I still like the idea of swapping with friends but if it keeps getting abused.......?

I'm still amazed that we have a "swap with friends" board and everything doesn't have to go through normal measures.

Big news in sea tomorrow!
As a (wanna be) SEA guy why do I get the FEELING it ain' gonna be good for DAL pilots and a windfall for eskimos and foreigners!
I am hoping against hope that RA may have something to announce that will be good for all DAL pilots for once...... |

Do they not understand that trip parking hurts us all? Do 777 pilots have no shame? |

I guess my only concern is this: What gives you the credibility or knowledge to speak for every pilot in your council? Are you doing demographic based studies, or are you listening to the loudest voices in the crew room? Are you an advocate of formal polling? How exactly do you represent the will of the pilots when clearly your will (as a no voter) is not indicative of the statistical reality? Have you stopped to think that maybe the representatives currently in place have it right, and you are only imagining that we aren't doing well at certain things?
I only bring this up as a matter of internal reflection. It's easy to see one side of the coin but takes effort to look at the other side. Our management team runs circles around ALPA in terms of communication, support, and assistance to the line pilot. When I got my new hire briefing I was mortified by the entire thing - and I don't speak as an outsider. I was deeply entrenched in ALPA at one point. I know how the system works. So if your plan is to communicate for the sake of hearing yourself talk, then great. You may be the only one listening. Of course until someone gets violated, investigated for sick leave abuse, etc etc etc. You know - the things that make a pilot suddenly glad to have a union that knows its place. As far as the voting result for the contract, C2012 was passed after serious propaganda saying "you arent going to get any better- don't you want new airplanes?" from both ALPA and management. 38% of the group voted no on it and many that voted yes begrudgingly did so as a result of the propaganda campaign.... moving that 38% margin much closer to at least the 50% mark. So no, the representatives don't necessarily have it right by the statements in your first paragraph. |

That shouldn't be hard to fix. A little contract "clarification" and a few extra lines of code.

By all accounts, the C2012 missed guidance by formal polling from the membership by a pretty wide margin. Is that not statistical evidence enough? How can they say they have the will of the pilot group when they directly ignored the polling that told them what it was?
