There is no requirement to remain theater qualled, right? So you can avoid going far east or far west forever, if you like. The problem with having an all encompassing "Avoid Theater" would be; who decides what is Far East or what is Far West and Far South?

What is Hawaii?

How about Aruba? Or Bogota? Is Athens the same as Cairo? Where does Europe end and Middle East begin?

I'll go to Joburg, but I'm never going to Lagos! So an "Avoid Africa" won't work for me.

I don't mind putting in a few extra minutes by being more specific on something as important as my bids...

I guess if they did a simple, "Avoid all International" choice, that would work for the guys who just want to fly domestic 757, but that wipes out St. Marten, my favorite 24 hr. layover!

As soon as we get Longevity Based Pay, I'm bidding what ever lays over in SXM, for the rest of my life!

In 4 years, IMO, there will be less planes and less pilots, regardless of what some say is "going to happen".

This isn't far from what was put forth by some a year ago. And then we had SD telling us if we passed the TA in all likelihood we would see hiring before the end of 2012. The prediction along the line of Boog's is the one prediction (aka - implied reward that was never given an explanation for being dangled and then never followed through with) of the two that has yet to be discredited.

Also interesting that ATL concourse A&B have freshly painted lines for the 321

SGU also has A319/320/321 lines painted so I wouldn't read much into that. I think the vendor that paints lines just paints all fleets on the line.

Random find but I thought it was interesting:

You know when you think about it, the strategy for a lot of airlines is buy new and put the whole thing on autopilot and count your chickens. Delta's is hand fly it. Look for stuff like the MD-90s. The Wright Brothers bucked the trend in their time and went for a design that was inherently unstable like a bicycle is unstable so that they could control it, being unstable is not a bad thing.

Thanks Sailing for the info, but dont you know that facts aren't nearly as entertaining as rumors and speculation?

A "possible" narrowbody order and the chance of exercising options are fact?

from sailingfun

The possible narrow body purchase ïs in addition to the 100 737's planned as replacement aircraft.
and

If Delta purchase 40 additional airframes via the two new RFP's we will put into service over 240 airframes in the next 4 years. We also hold options for 30 more 737's. the fleet plan has us parking 85 757's in that period. There will be some A320's parked in Addition to the 757's however the net gain in airframes should be around 130

How many is "some A320's parked?" 5? 40? More than 40?

Net gain "should be around". Should be.....

And are those two new RFP's firm orders? Or is that just shopping around for price on something that may or may not happen?

You're right 76drvr. Those were fact filled posts.

And nothing is "confirmed" until they are on the line flying revenue trips.

How many 50 seaters do you think we'll need?
Oh, I don't know. Maybe a hundred?
Could it be more?
Yeah, I s'pose. Let's pad it and say 125.
Ok, that works.
Now get this. The pilots said they would GIVE us some big RJs for this!
Are you kidding me? These 50-seaters are obsolete!
No, 100% truth. They will let us have more 76-seaters for carrying out our plan with the 50-seaters!
Well, I kinda feel bad taking advantage of them, but it's just business, right?
Yeah, it's just business! And plus, think about the bonus.
Yeah, the bonus........................ Let's do it!
I'm onboard. Where do I sign?

Fly Et al,

You guys are giving management waay too much credit. Really, the 50 seaters were going away just because they are obsolete? Hell, we were buying them by the hundreds when they were already obsolete!

Do not underestimate managements ability to manage for other then long term success. In a perfect world management would weigh all the factors and make the best decisions for DAL long term. However in this world there are many other factors which management takes into account which are contrary to long term success.

Lets say top management were to be rewarded with ....... I don't know, Hell I'm just spit-ballin here, lets say stock. Do you suppose that some in management would take actions to pump up the short term price of our stock - even if there were alternate actions that could far better help the company in the long run? Can you say stock buyback?

I am not saying that there is no truth to your post, but if you have to assume that our management is functioning efficiently with only the long term interest of DAL in mind then you are overlooking a lot, and I do mean a lot of DALs post-2000 history.

This is incorrect. Under the old contract Delta would have to park or sell 70-seat airframes to take delivery of additional 76-seat RJs (CRJ-900). They could indeed pump and dump but they were capped at 255 70-76 seat airframes. This contract allowed them to keep the existing 70 and 76-seaters AND ADD 70 additional 76-seaters. FWIW prior to thd DAL contract, United and AA only had 70-seat RJs, AA capped exceptionally low and United tied to domestic block hours. CAL and SWA permitted no such aircfaft. Post DAL contract the other airlines: CAL, UAL and AA caved on scope. Delta pilots are a large contributor to keeping the DCI concept relevant for many more years, we were potentially close to a reversal. Now ALPA prays for a pilot shortage but the reality is UAL/CAL and AA/US Air will shrink like Delta and management teams from all sides are pushing hard for elimination of the max retirement age.

Sailing, you owe it to fellow pilots and yourself to know the truth and because of your position, represent the truth. The reality is Delta pilots got hoodwinked big time, it was an industry effort. We did restore some pay, exceptionally so in the case of widebody captains, sadly this targets a small group.

Lastly, growth airplanes? What has out post merger history taught us? So we shrank all this way via early outs and retirements to turn around and grow capacity back? Im not saying 321s and 330s are not a possibility, but it will take awhile to convince this pilot any management team has an agenda other than being a One World, Sky Team or Star Alliance CEO with a multitude of operators to whipsaw from.

Come on sailing, inside you know better and you probably are a smart guy. Heck with ALPA and those with secret agendas. Lets get DAL a union that will preserve the profession and take care of "us." You know this needs to happen, I and about half the list know it needs to happen. FPL and selling your soul to the devil is not a better life than "just flying the line."

This is kind of irritating...twice in the past two months a sweet trip shows up for pickup on the swap board, but the comments say that it's only for a specific employee number. Why do that instead a swap with friends? Juniority sucks.
