But you missed the point.

They spend money on planes they're planning on parking so why not spend money on planes that you'll keep on average 10 years?

Is the roi on an interior overhaul 20 years or no dice?

Maybe but look who they're fighting. Its like crippled people running from bears, they could be starving but they're still healthIER. Especially in comparison to the European counterparts theyre currently slaughtering or their beat up stabbed in the back American counterparts.

Its the SWA model, use oil and the government to help you win.

IDK, but you also have to factor in what a 767-300ER can bring in revenue wise vs a DC9-50. There is a huge difference. It may have taken very little to hit the ROI with the DC9s. But like I said, we are comparing a fleet of 17 DC9-50s to 79 B767-300ER/400s. It will likely take many more years to hit the ROI goal for the 767 fleet vs the DC9 fleet.

Hard to say. Only time will tell.

Well, put it this way. The DC9 getting new paint and a new interior probably made $0. So it cost money to do it but it had to be done.

But does the new interior on the 767 make more money than the old interior? I bet it does. So that, like winglets (on a dedicated long range jet only), shrinks that ROI. Those things are "making" money, not costing money.*

So that gets back to the earlier point, are 10 A330s replacement jets or growth jets? Depends on when they get here imho.

Delta to spend $1 billion on aircraft and club upgrade.

A day ahead of their fourth quarter earnings announcement, Delta Air Lines announced it will spend $1 billion in the next three years to improve its aircraft and elite clubs.

The Atlanta-based airline, which will spend roughly $300 million a year, said planned enhancements will improve the customer experience.

"Delta's planned fleet and product investments mark the most significant investment we have made in our customers in more than a decade," said Delta CEO Richard Anderson. "Our premium travelers tell us that the comfort of a flat bed seat with direct aisle access, a first class experience on regional jets and in-flight entertainment are important factors in their choice of carrier."

Some of the enhancements include:
-installing full flat-bed seats in its BusinessElite section on 90 trans-oceanic aircraft.
-add first class cabins to 66 regional jets
-complete the modification of 269 pre-merger Northwest aircraft to the Delta interior.
-renovate and expand its Los Angeles Sky Club lounge and adding lounges to Seattle, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.

So notice what makes money: flat-beds in first, first class in jumbo RJs, better sky clubs.

It may shrink the time required to hit the ROI goal, but we are still comparing a fleet of 17 DC9-50s to 79 B767s. So it will likely still take longer, & the premium product provided by the lie flat product isn't even comparable to 1st class in a DC9 where most probably cashed in on a free upgrade.

So there is a much greater return from the B767 as compared to the DC9. Really an apples to oranges comparison.
