Two days from the end of my last day of call, on the day I returned from a 5-day international trip, I had a raw score of 159, the highest raw score of three pages of people on reserve with 2 days left on call, and I got put on short call because I was junior and raw score is not taken into account. Of course I had no short call days completed because I flew every day. I for one believe that the raw score should be taken into account in determining short call...
But if we are going to stay consistent with respecting seniority on reserve, we cannot in good faith couple SC to buckets so that a guy in bucket 3 with 0 SCs is not up for SC before a guy in bucket 1. If a senior pilot (relative term I know) bids reserve and does not fly and is in bucket 1 with 0 hours and 1 SC and junior guy is bucket 3 with 70 hours and 0 SCs and both could be assigned one remaining SC that next SC should go to the junior guy regardless of how much he has worked. The logic? I believe people here say "if someone is going to be at home and not fly, it should be the senior pilot." I don't buy that and therefore also think SC should be assigned to the lowest guys in the lowest bucket first. |
Updated link above to the correct clip. What a Jam ....

HVY, I agree with you about raw factoring into short call. That can definitely be improved. As far as you flying almost every day, that can only be put in context when we see what the rest of the category looks like. My point was not that guys would not be flown a lot - as you well know. My point was that the bucket system, notwithstanding SC deficiencies, does a pretty good job of spreading out flying. A bunch of guys responded to my earlier post - a few posted their individual situations, which does not really help us evaluate the fairness of the system one way or another. Another poster broke out the top and bottom 5 and it looked all were flying a lot. Unless someone wants to methodically go through all the categories in various seasons its all just snapshots. Even me going through my whole category is just a snapshot and may not paint a good picture of the whole system. Hopefully DALPA will at some time conduct a statistical analysis of how things have been going and release the results. My main point is this - if the system is inherently unfair and many senior pilots are getting whole months off while many junior pilots are being abused - I have not seen it. Nor have I seen anyone post a whole category toward the end of the month that shows this. I am not saying that it is not happening somewhere, just that we hear many anecdotal stories that start out with "I flew........" or "This happened to me......" Individuals monthly flying will always vary greatly. Every month in every category there is always a guy who flew more than any other pilot and always someone who flew less than any other pilot. I overheard in the ATL pilot lounge a couple of dudes saying the CO was having difficultly with the new interiors; specifically the seats. Something about certifying the seats or such. Just me unintentionally hearing them near me while signing in today. I have no proof that is really the case.

*unless someones idea of fair is having junior guys do all the work. |

No one is celebrating, and frankly, allowing reserves to fly to ALV+15 was perhaps, imo, the biggest concession we gave in C2012. Having said that, all the fear mongerers who said reserves are gonna fly 99 hours every month have been proven wrong..... again.

The full pain of ALV+15 won't be felt for another summer or maybe two--although plenty of folks have felt it already. The company still needs to "right size" the pilot group after our efficiency concessions. And good luck getting this genie back in the bottle in future negotiations.
But you knew all that. |

Going with hyperbole is not a winning strategy. I don't recall anyone saying everyone was going to fly 99 hours every month. I do remember hearing the claim you could fly up to 99 hours as a result of giving that staff-saving measure. You do have people flying their @rses off because of that concession. Why we gave them something like that with record profits, I'll never know.
