One day I was watching Top Gun and decided I wanted to be that guy. So I took out some huge loans on my 26% AMC Theatre credit card and got my pilots licenses. I was a certified flight instructor instrument and flew right seat on a Piper Chieftain when they had to do maintenance flights. But lucky for me a senior fourth floor type owed my mom, don't know why he did but she said he just did, and thus I got to come straight here to Delta to the ER. It was nice skipping the whole regional and military thing. Why do you ask?"

Of course, when I've been asked and expressed that opinion it was clear that "fine, great really" was not the answer being sought. |

Not my cup of tea either, but that was the inference I got from a couple of speakers recently. Apparently some folks think the Captains are not standard ... go figure, they're plenty standard enough IMHO.

Good TOTD story a friend just told me about....
He was deadheading yesterday (on DAL) and the PIC made the welcome aboard PA stating that he was a retired F16 pilot and the copilot was a C130 pilot so nobody should have any concerns as they are in excellent hands. LMFAO |

SOPA = Vol 1 Section 20 Amplified Procedures. SMAC = Flight Crew Training Manual. That's all SOPA/SMAC ever was at NWA. The idea of the rigidity of NWA procedures has created this urban legend in the eyes of South pilots as to what SOPA/SMAC was. I still have a copy of my fleet SOPA/SMAC from NWA. It is virtually identical to my DAL Vol 1 Section 20 and my FCTM, right down to the graphics. Vol 1 has tables that specify CA/FO and PF/PM actions, callouts, responses, etc. THAT is precisely what SOPA was at NWA. FCTM has amplified discussions of maneuvers including full page graphics of various procedures such as takeoff profiles, engine out profiles, etc. THAT is precisely what SMAC was at NWA. |
The reason they make Navy pilots fly out over the water is not machismo. It's cause there is less to hit when you crash.

I do not know who the "some folks" you are referring to are, but in my experience of sitting on many a jumpseat in both an official capacity and as a commuter, I see very good standardization. You are never gong to have 11,000 human beings do every single thing exactly the same, but we are doing a pretty good job. IMHO, SOPA/SMAC would do nothing to improve on that. Next month will be interesting to see if it is brought up. I for one hope like hell it won't. I've flown with the Navy philosophy most of my working life, and getting a sex change to fly like the Air Force would be too hard at this point .
