Wow. Are you one of those who have sent Carl PM's in the past hoping he would literally die? Sounds like you could be.

.... Now I'm beginning to wonder if you're really just one of those nasty political hatchet men for DALPA.

DAL88 and Index, your apologies will be accepted should you come to your senses.

Oh, and on the voluntary displacement, the way it works is, if you are 'senior' in your category but want to voluntarily displace to another category, for that one move, you will only be able to displace to where the JUNIOR most pilot, who would be Mandatorily displaced, would be able to hold a slot.

I.E. you assume his juniority when you voluntarily displace, only for the bid run, to get into your new category, then your normal seniority number will be in effect once you are in the new category.

As an example, if you are Number 1 in your category of say, 200 pilots, and they are going to displace 20 guys out, (number 180-200) for you to voluntarily displace, you can only go to where the bottom guy (number 200-180) who would have been displaced could hold a seat.

Right now, the bottom 747 guys cannot hold the 777 in either DTW or ATL, so even the number one 747 guy could not "voluntarily" displace into it. But if they were to open a MSP/LAX base, any one can bid it, straight seniority. And once the fence comes down of course, then anyone who can hold it can bid in as in any normal bid.

Timbo,

The voluntary displacement seemed like a "pie in the sky" dream and I wasn't sure if the pilot was correct. Fortunately I was never "well read" on the finer points of displacements. Thanks for the explanation.

We both are equally confused with Crew Planning's decisions on where/when they are basing the wide body A/C. You are correct regarding the one base theorem and I have always advocated a single base for such a small fleet as our "premium wide body" airplanes.

Me thinks they are shooting from the hip!!

Sigh....

Crew planning shooting from the hip? OceanCrosser, you are delusional and obviously haven't been around here very long.

That's nothing new here at DL. When I was a new hire, a Capt. told me; "Their five year plan changes every three weeks..."

Of course if there were any stability, there would be no need for all the "Crew Planners" right? That's why they keep churning the pilot bases and moving equipment around, to justify their existence.

Bonuses all around!

After the Pan Am merger, I was at a DALPA meeting in BOS (when it was a DL base) and the rumor of the day was, the company was considering closing BOS.

One guy from Pan Am stood up and said, "Years ago, Pan Am Management told us they could SAVE $3 Million a year if they opened a Pilot Base in BOS, to save on layover costs! So they opened BOS. A few years later, another Management type said they could SAVE $3 Million a year, if they CLOSED the BOS pilot base! He stood up and told them, 'Hey, I know how Pan Am can earn $6 Million a year, just open and close the BOS Pilot base!!'" :D
