A pilot who begins short call at noon is not on call the entire day, as he is at rest 0000-1200. Before he was assigned that short call, he was counted in Reserves Available, but once the short call and the requisite prior 12 hours' rest was put on his line, he was not.

OTOH, a pilot who carries a short call into a day from the previous day does count in that day's Reserves Available because he is on call, i.e., not at rest, for the entire day.

In practice, it appears they knock one off the avail list for every one they project to actually use. The numbers just don't add up

Could WSs play a factor in the calculation? Doesn't make sense I know, but nobody is saying the numbers make sense to begin with.

Fwiw as you guys snip around categories, ATL717B is running about 2 to 3 times available over reserve. Getting a same day ws is like getting a gswc in other categories.

The system is automated, and I do not believe the scheduler has the ability to change the numbers manually. Were he to do so, it would be a violation of the PWA.

You might call the ALPA office and speak to one of the scheduling gurus about your concerns.

Hey, with all this contract business and new hiring going on, it might be almost time to dust off Guard dude again.

I've never researched it much, well, at all, so I find the Req/Avail ratio to change in mysterious ways. What makes it so mysterious is that it always seems designed to work against me.

Not sure about the Avail side, but it sure feels like the Req side is being heavily manipulated.

Couldn't agree more. Until Jesse gets back, I'll try to fill in:
