Sounds like another status quo violation.
Where's Dalpa to call out this crap?
I asked my rep about this same thing not to long ago and he pointed me to an interpretation from 2014 that clarifies this (Anderson interpretation). I didn't ask for permission to quote the conversation, so I won't repost it, but here's a link to the interpretation:

Long story short, the way I read it is that, unless we specifically negotiate provisions regarding extensions, then the company is free to do what they are doing. Sucks, but it's not ALPA's fault.

Quick newbie non-rev question as the fam heads out on a trip tomorrow. Buddy-quette says "relaxed" dress code. Clean jeans and sneakers OK even if they get upgraded?

We're pretty conservative dressers in general and everytime they've traveled before even the kids have been in what would qualify in the FOM for business attire. But this time it's to a very casual destination and we're trying to pack as light as possible. I'm going in jumpseat-legal clothing just in case, but I figure no reason to pack another set of clothes and shoes for everyone else if not needed.

The agent will decide if you are upgradable, I have seen shorts and deck shoes no socks, in first.(Intl). Normally jeans and a golf shirt will get you there.

Why even have an extension if you can just force one to take it.

NYC is the most difficult base to staff and also has the largest number of offline commuters. Who is the genius that decided to make offline commuting less desirable? Many NYC commuting plans include a mix of JetBlue and American with Delta backups. Under the new policy American and Jet Blue are no longer options the company considers viable.
Uh commuting is a choice remember. What if the company just up and said we all had to live in base? What would you do then?

If the company banned commuting then the NYC base would have to close.

Typical. Quit or join us....don't complain....we know better....no transparency allows us to do what we want. Exactly the attitudes the cronies want to propagate.

If it weren't for guys like PD, the union would be a complete disaster of spending 100% of their time slapping each other on the back and figuring out how to scam more money while doing as little as possible to not rock the boat that contains the feed trough.

Getting called out is the only thing that keeps them moderately honest.

You can only be forced to take it once per trip unless you have a 30 hour layover. In my experience, there is heavy pressure to extend. I have never not extended because the path of least resistance is extending. I have not had a captain yet that wanted to call it a day. If you decline extension, you have to fill out a detailed ASAP report and talk to the duty pilot.

Yes, commuting is a choice and as long as commuting remains a choice, I will continue working for the company. If the company said commuting wasn't a choice, I would quit. The fact that they changed the commuting rules during negotiations, prior to the worst commuting season of the year, with record load factors, after the AEs to bases (NYC, LAX, SEA) with a large amount of offline commuting is a cheap shot at the pilot group.

This isn't the only career option available. We are all college educated professionals with many options outside of just this one employer. Most of us have options outside of this career field entirely, it's a shame not everyone sees that. If we had the self confidence to believe in our career potential as a group, 50% +1 would be a much higher threshold in negotiations.
