You can also view when/where your crewmembers are coming in from. Not sure if it was there from the start but I sure used it a lot last week with the storms and being rerouted all over the place.

What’s a carry out trip? Is that a trip that goes into the next bid?

And generally should be avoided as they can change such awarded trips. Everyone has their own thing though of course, but most seem to avoid.

Also known as an asterisk rotation. Can change when the next months bid package comes out. You’re only guaranteed the portion that falls in the current bid. Let’s say you had a nice commutable five day starting in July and three days go into August. August pairings come out and it’s changed down to a four day non-commutable with a late checkout on day 4. You lose that day 5 pay (ie it’s not guaranteed even though it was on your line from July).

depends on the fleet, i've never once had an ER carryout trip change--and i bid them every single month, but on the 73 it seemed to happen a couple times.

I’ll grant that there is a general suspicion toward carry-out trips, but I do not think it’s well-earned. On widebodies, the trips rarely change between the original publish date and the ensuing month when it matters. With sufficient DH, and duty/ trip rig ( all of which gets paid in the later month), the portion that spills to the next month can have a high average daily credit; I’ve had 4 days pay 30+ hours in month # 2. I’ve seen the trips change on narrowbodies, but most of it was inconsequential. If you are not senior, avoiding carry out closes off a lot of opportunities.

In a time when I could not hold Christmas vacation or Christmas off, I would bid vacation in the week or two prior to Christmas. With a stellar carry out trip from November it was possible to meet the December bid window without bidding. Voila; Christmas off. Unstack this! (Unstacking is a lesson for another day for the uninitiated- it’s all about forced assignment of holiday flying). The scenario I just painted is both rare and special and requires a lot of luck along with answered prayers. But it did occur three times for me, and it wouldn’t have happened if carry out were viewed negatively by me. Regardless, the spill over portion from a trip that began last month often gives a welcome credit boost to get the next month rollling in your favor.
