Oh well, I do international too so I need the bigger bag. Commuting could be tough, I’ve had issues offline too. The upside is I only need one small flight kit bag. I think it’s worth it if you’re living out of it for 4+ days.

I bought the big luggage works bag when I started flying international years ago but it was rediculously heavy...even when it was empty. I stopped using it. I’d like to have more room in the winter, for packing warmer clothes, but the extra weight wasn’t worth it for the extra 2-3 inches of room. Plus, as a commuter like you mentioned, it isn’t easy to find room often. Maybe they’ve reduced the weight but mine was too heavy for the little bit of extra room it provided.

Can someone who deadheads around the domestic system with such a bag weigh in if it's worth it? Do you prefer it over adding a third bag flight attendant-style?

I found a samsonite at ROSS for $40 that holds half again as much as my international luggage works bag. It weighs a fraction of that bag and fits straight in in the overhead bin (not on the side). I got a hook off Amazon that attaches around the luggage handle.

New bag with hook. Holds half again as much and way lighter for $50. I’ll see how long it lasts. I’m not real hard on luggage.

A real pilot gets a bag at Costco....then returns it when it wears out. 😳

I thought you just nonrev through ATL and when you get a plastic bag full of parts you go to baggage service and complain. We managed to destroy a hard sided big bag for my wife. It looked like it had been dropped from a 757. She was not happy, it was her “around the world luggage” she had since college. We thought it was indestructible but landing on the corner from 15 feet up was the fatal blow.

I have both size bags and prefer the smaller bag with the round 3rd bag that clips on. The third bag is great for holding your wallet cell phone, water bottle etc when going to the fitness center and also allows you to keep your sweaty workout clothes separate.

When on a DH or commuting the small 3rd bag is also much easier.

For the gym and day hikes I have this, very compact when not in use.

The luggage works 22" suiter is nice in between option. It still fits wheels/handle first into the overhead, but with the outer suit coat compartment it can be loaded about 1" thicker than the standard LW 22" bags. I routinely fly 6-7 day trips with that bag in the winter with separate workout shoes. Before the trolls pile on, yes I do change my uniforms throughout the trip. I also found a nice Swissgear backpack that holds my laptop, tablet and running shoes, so I don't have to put the extra shoes in the suitcase.
