Was thinking perhaps Tokyo as I've never been there, any recommendations on the min days to spend there as well as a best departure city to assure Delta 1?

TIA

I went to NRT (Delta 1), bought a Zed on ANA for about $100 to Bangkok, then bought a ticket on Smile Air for $80 to fly to Chaing Mai. 4 travel days there and back is about right.

If you go to Tokyo, don't waste a good jet lag, get up early and go to the Tsukiji fish market. If in session, go to a Sumo match, a Tokyo Giants home baseball game, and if in the spring there are lots of amazing cherry blossoms to see.

I would agree on your Chiang Mai assessment. I lived in Thailand for 3 years and when I go back I always do at least 10 days. The trip is brutal and you don’t want to be thinking about the return trip as soon as you get there. For future reference KAL has a direct Inchon to Chiang MI flight that works with our inbound Delta flights. I think it was around $100 Zed.

Sorry can’t help you on Tokyo, stationed at Mishawa many years ago but I was poor and had 4 kids. Our adventures consisted of trips to the local Ramen house. The kids did love the local fish market so that is definitely a must see if you can get to one. If it slimes, slithers or crawls in the ocean the Japanese will eat it. Makes for some interesting viewing and smells.

Thanks for all the replies. I've got 11 days but with the 4 travel days + 2 days minimum of feeling like garbage I'll have to do Thailand another time when I've got at least 14 days off. Not to mention the Seoul to Chiang Mai flight leaves 50 minutes after the scheduled arrival in Seoul, and it's only 1 flight every 2-3 days :(. Maybe I can convince the wife to go skiing instead of eating, nah, probably won't be able to do that :).

Good friend asking about possibility of a oneway buddy pass from FRA or AMS early January.

I hate buddy passes and also hate going to airport on my off days, so I am clueless. I can come up with a thousand reasons to tell him to buy a positive space ticket.

What say you sagely world travelers? Might it be worth the risk for the budget shopper?

I always say “I don’t give buddy passes, not even my sister uses them, sorry”

Thanks, but I’m looking for info more along the lines of
“S2’s pack the cabin from there in early January” or
“always payload optimized” or
“best time of year to come back from Western Europe,” etc...

Or just do as I do, tell them straight up it could be the worst travel experience ever as they are the lowest of the low priority. But - it's cheap and works great on occasion. I don't give out too many buddy passes but when I do, I ensure loads are reasonable, expectations are lowered and they well know they might not go anywhere.

Overall I've had good success but it has to be the right person, the right time, right set of expectations with a flexible plan. If you can manage it, it's worth doing a friend a solid.

Off topic question... Is scheduling required to notify me of my 30 hour rest? I am currently on a 10 day stretch of reserve and I checked my schedule this morning (day4) and noticed I’ve been at “rest” for 5 hours.. I never got a notification and had no idea.

Mine are snapped up by family members with no real issues on international travel. Just be smart and pick the right days. I don’t allow their use from June through Aug.
I have no idea what the going to the airport on days off means.

You must be notified.

Means I seldom partake of our NRSA benefits.

Thanks to you, et al, for the responses!
