... and the worst sin committed was to try to use Delta's furloughed pilots as bargaining chips. Lawson asked the Delta MEC for help, the Delta MEC told him "no, this isn't a negotiation." Lawson replied in kind. I don't like that either, but it IS THE DELTA MEC's JOB to protect the Delta pilots, not Comair's. Did COMAIR pilots who previously remained silent start turning the heat on their MEC? I wasn’t there but it stinks no matter how you look at it. FWIW - I posted the JC Lawson letter and we as a group should not forget it, but I don’t think we should deny jump-seats over this issue. For example, I wouldn't lose any sleep if our MEC made it a policy not to have reciprocal jumpseat with CMR. It's also beyond me that WE negotiated a preferential interview process for them, in exchange for preferential hiring. We in fact ended up paying them to right a wrong. How bizarre... Still, when I encounter a former CMR guy at DAL, I don't discuss the former divisions between us, since he's a Delta pilot. But since they often to feel a little, you know, ...awkward about that little check to the RJDC, or simply their silence as they tacitly endorsed Lawson, then they often nervously end up "there" of their own accord. If they feel obligated to offer the traditional defensive "it-wasn't-me-it-was-Lawson" song and dance, I tell them I've already seen it, and I'm not impressed. |

P.S. Tangent not directed at forgot to bid: Many years ago, I was traveling through DEN and needed to JS on UAL Express. I was denied the request twice and finally had to buy an expensive last minute ticket to get where I was going. The Captain said, "If we can't ride on Delta, then you can't ride on us." It sucked and I was ticked, but he did have a point. It was futile to explain to him that management wouldn't give us the jumpseat. The bottom line was that we hadn't paid management enough to get it.
Speaking of being denied jumpseats, I ran to a CAL cockpit one time trying to get a jumpseat home or to work, I honestly can't remember, I just know I was happy to have made it on time. At the time I had been at Coex for a few months or a year, I can't remember, it was before 9/11 for sure. But I asked for the jumpseat, kind as ever, and the Captain wouldn't look at me. He wanted to know if I had voted for IACP (Continental's union) or ALPA before he'd let me on, problem was I was on probation and not allowed to vote. I explained that, he said who would you have voted for. The FO gave me a signal to say no, so I did, he let me on. I didn't know much about unions, scabs or strikes back then but I learned, it'd be fun to run into that situation now. What an *******, but he's probably like IAH LEC rep or something now, thats how those guys work. |

I thought the increase in DFW flying was due to Continental leaving Skyteam and not due to JAL.

He hated pilots. It was not "just business" for him. It was personal. Denying the jumpseat was his little power play. (among others) My theory? Ron Allen had a very small Johnson and spent his whole life compensating. The only good thing that happened in bankruptcy was that we were able to dump most of his lifetime perks. |
