WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Transportation Department is approving a swap of takeoff and landing slots between Delta Air Lines Inc. and US Airways Group Inc., while imposing conditions similar to those that the airlines have said might kill the deal.

The slots are at Reagan National Airport in Washington and LaGuardia airport in New York.

The Transportation Department says it would require Delta and US Airways to sell 14 pairs of slots at Reagan and 20 at LaGuardia to airlines that have little service at those airports.

The DOT says its conditions are similar to those it announced on Feb. 9. The airlines said then that those conditions would negate the financial benefits of the deal.

Time to go to court. This is the most regulated deregulated industry I've seen!!

Anybody notice Jetblue said they were starting service out of DCA? Is that due to their agreement with AA?

The DOT is off the leash and on an empire building campaign. Will the DOJ sit on their hands and let a backwater bureaucracy step all over their turf? I'm guessing there's a planeload of lawyers headed to DC right now that say "no". Should be an interesting case.

Just give 'em all to SWA.. that's what they want. What a pathetic government we now have.

Take it, lick our wounds, focus on HND and China, and still get 105 daily slots in LGA. Does anyone really think we will walk away from 105 over 20?

I bet they will approve the AA/JB deal.
