Lastly, this was the first thing discussed. Cross fleeting of management. DAL is sending fNWA down south and fDAL up north. Now that our "baseline" operations has met DOT approval and we are merger complete, now we are going to focus on best practices. Say goodbye to crap like 500 feet checks. Part of that is to cross fleet our management to see whats good and bad on the other side. Working on IT. Youre going to see more IT initiatives like the jump seat booking which allow us to do stuff without calling mom or dad.

Thats all I can remember that hasn't already been said.

Does anyone know why the 500'call was there? I'm all for best practices, but who makes that determination, what is the criteria and if it is a "best practice," it should be in the book.

The North flight attendants I fly with swear the new service is the way the South did things. I tell them I think it is new for everyone.

Exactly New. Heard the same. Just like when we started those goofy new oceanic crossing procedures (that have since been nixed) a while back. North was told it was a south thing and vice versa. Turns out it was neither. It was a 4th floor type who doesn't even fly the line.

Seems like some managers may be trying to make a name for themselves by re-inventing the wheel, and the merger is a convenient way to get it in there.

I was told by a M88A LCA that it's there so the PNF is aware that the PF is not out in left field....ie paying attention to what's happening and flying the a/c.

Ice,

For us, the 500' call used to be a 200' call and it was "two-hundred to touchdown-checks." I suppose we did it on visual approaches to make sure we got used to saying something on every approach ("Two-hundred to minimums", or "two-hundred to level off.")

I think someone in our training department liked the number "two," because we used to say "two to go" as we climbed or descended two thousand feet above and below or assigned altitude as well. :)

Funny thing about that is now that there is no response required, I usually wonder if the captain is 1. daydreaming about ...... 2. daydreaming about what he is going to get to eat in the terminal 3. going through his writeup about my poor performance and lack of judgement 4. just plane ignoring me or 5. following the procedure :)

We have a "out of ___ for ____, ALT armed" and a "100' above and going" call on the 88, I think it's an 88 thing though. :D

I noticed on the new iPhone update you can see the airport standby list, don't think that was possible before. On the nom journey world Safari still screws up icrew, I'll see if firefox is better.

Seriously though if you have to look up every cleared MCO for the last 10 days..........it could take some serious time. I review the last few days and look up any open MCO's in the MEL but that doesn't usually take too overly long.

Denny,

My few, aging memory cells are used for other things. Like why I already forgot the leads name, when she or he just told it to me 3 minutes ago. :) Plus, you have to remember we had and still have two logbooks (Aircraft and Flight Attendant). It's enough trouble to just check for 10 days of history on both of those. The South birds only have one, right?

Wasn't "Passing through assigned altitude" also a required call on the '88? :)

Buzz and any other old air lifters out there remember the ACT program? It was the precursor to CRM. We watched this video done by a USAFA Behavioral Sciences professor who did a study with major air line crews. He put them in the sim and had them fly an ILS. About halfway down the Captain would feign death and about 50% of the time the F/O would let the airplane crash. This was mid 80s time frame, about the time of the KAL 747 crash I think.

500' checks are not so intrusive and not a bad idea.
