Gents,
I was asked a question about Delta's QOL that I didn't know how to answer.

Can a lineholder pilot pick up a trip out of base?

Say a pilot is based in DTW on 7er and really wants once in a while go to Madrid, where he has parents serving a religious mission.
How can he pick up a 7er MAD trip out of JFK?

1. GS out of base - is self explanatory, but very rare.
2. White slip? ... never mind I see it is possible on PCS ...
3. Take it (if advertised) from swap board?
4. Swap with the pot?

Thank you.

In the summer when things are busy out of base white slips are possible. Normally if you get one it will be the day prior or the morning of the trip when someone sicks out. Now and then some winter trips show up but in the 1113 contract out of base WS moved below reserves in base. Big change. Hopefully it will go back the other way in the new contract. Good trips do sometimes make it through to the end of the trip coverage process in the winter. A 54 hour trip to Africa just went out to a very junior Captain on the ER in NYC on a greenslip. 54 doubled is a nice boost in pay.

Oh hell no... why do you continually want to screw the reserves?

Ok so not "dead" but definitely dead soon. By the way do you know the fuel flow increase of a CRJ-200 to increase from 250KCAS to 320KCAS?

Or what speed approximates Cost Index 10?

Or what climb profile is most economical in terms of time?

On a CRJ-200.

Hint - do you know what aircraft the CRJ-200 was designed to replace? And do you know what aircraft it did replace? And do you now understand why it's dead?

Official DCI answers:
  • Dunno, but we're getting there faster
  • What's a cost index of 10, and who cares?
  • Depends on winds aloft

I once asked Jerry Atkin why we did not fly the aircraft on an econ profile and save a ton of money (average cruise .80 to .825; econ .76) the thing is draggy enough to actually fly an idle 4 degree descent (saves 1,000 lbs per leg in Mexico where the controllers seem to prefer that profile). Mr. Atkin's response was that "we" (Skywest / ASA ) got paid a bonus for on time performance and going fast helped make up for the always late gate operations. Fuel was a pass through cost. From the top, our mission was to be on time, screw the fuel since SkyWest didn't buy it.

If fuel was a consideration, why did Delta demand the replacement of ATR's with RJ's that carried 16 less people, a lot less bags, in a smaller cabin at the cost of one and one half times more fuel burn.

250 to 320? 50% fuel flow increase.

CI010 is 245kts/.70 Mach.

290kts/.70 Mach is more efficient than 250/.70 Mach in terms of time. So you actually slow down after you level off (according to Bomba)

The CRJ-200 is marginally faster and marginally less efficient than a Dash-8-300 which it was designed to replace when it's operated "as designed".

Instead your greedy major airline bean counters and the managers at regionals who don't have to buy the fuel used it to replace DC-9s and 737-200s.

Cause the majority of folks don't spend their career's on reserve. It's called flexibility and quality of life.

Mark this post as a first, Sailing and Bacon agree. I'm checking with my pastor to see if hell is frozen. On a different note: I love living out west, skied in the morning, golfed in the afternoon.

I think that's what the Bible meant when it said "rumors of wars" but not real wars.

See hell hasn't frozen over until Carl and Slow agree, Tsquare tells Carl he's sorry, Carl apologizes to Alfa, Hockey is happy with something, I proofread before i hit submit, Newk has a party foul and Luvjockey says he wish he had been hired at Delta.

And that's just for starters.

Alright my short term memory is worthless. What was the trick to type in the address bar to see the schedules early. Probably too early right now but I want to be prepared....for when it is not too early.
