The reserve staffing on the 717 is an alarming 3 percent, so you actually may get a line immediately out of training. Its such a shortstaffed category and they're still getting 30 or so more of these delivered for a total of 88. Youll fly much better trips on the 737, but you will also have a lot of 4 leg days regardless of which narrowbody fleet you go to. They just annound a new NYC 717 base a couple days ago which is a great move for the network options feeding NY.
The 717 growth in ATL will be limited in the near future since 2 other bases have been opened. Look for many 717 in NYC for new hires

So if the ATL 717 was to only drop occasionally to new hires, is it safe to assume that those that bid/receive it can expect to be remain junior and on reserve for quite sometime in ATL?

Predicting where and when marketing is going to place time is a exercise in futility. The airframes are coming very fast and there will be plenty of block hours to fund increases in all 3 bases. There is also a bunch of upward movement ongoing and coming that can cause rapid changes. Pick the aircraft where you want to be based. There is no effective way to predict how time will fall out in the future.

TexanDriver - I was in your shoes, and I actually had a choice. I chose the 737 to ATL, but I also considered the 717 to ATL. I chose the 737 because that was the airplane I wanted to fly and the trip locations were better, but mostly because I did not want to do 4-5 legs per day. Generally the 737 will fly 1-2 if longer legs and also plenty of 3-leg days and occasionally 4 legs. With the hiring that is going to be happening in the next few years, I wouldn't necessarily prioritize seniority. AND, you will be seat locked for only one year as a new hire, so you could always change planes. Pick a jet you want to fly and a route schedule you think will be fun. It's a personal choice for sure...many positives for both choices.

March, if not April new hires in the 737 are holding lines in ATL. At least in Sept. All things subject to change. Such as downsizing of the 757 as ghilis stated.

There will be plenty more ATL growth In the near future, be it to place like VPS, Fay,ags, ECP, Gso, Gsp, and the likes. Probably 717 flying with 4-6 legs a day. RJ flying is coming back to mainline. Better to be flown by mainline with mainline aircraft at mainline rates than an RJ at the lowest bidder price. If you criticize it and complain it is easy enough for delta to lay subpar wages to a regional to fly the same routes on a 76 seat aircraft. Please remember that when you think about complaining.

Don't think I've read anyone complaining about too many legs or the type of flying on this thread! They're just trying to figure out what is best for them as new hires, as well they should. To which I say: Welcome aboard, the water is fine!!! Wish I could fly with you guys! (Don't wish it enough that I'm gonna down bid on purpose!)

The most fun I ever had at the airline was down bidding from the "8" to the 737. (Got back in touch with the troops.) Are you sure that the "Zoomies" go through UPT?

If they already went to "Zoom" school, why would they have to go thru UPT? My guess is the gubmint put the "slow" ones thru a four year program instead of a one year............

The 717 looks like a great airplane. I just threw my bid in for 717 NYC FO (seat locks are waived for a new category or base) and it looks like a 5 day differences course from the md88, so I could potentially be on it as soon as I'm done with md88 OE. 30 FO vacancies in NYC on the 717, and only 5 people senior to me have bid it thus far. Holding a line with weekends off and BOS overnights? Yea I can do that
