Looks like I'll be making a similar choice here in a couple of weeks. What about the 73N trips are better? Also, does SLC only have A320 for NB? I'd like to work my way west without retraining, or even better, during the 12 month lock!

With the 320, sometimes I feel like I need a permission slip to go west of the Mississippi on fifi. 5 leg days? We do those! Up 6 legs? Done em! But, it's done in comfort. So... yeah...
SLC has both 320 and 73N on the narrowbody side, as well as 7ER.
None of them are bad choices, though... welcome aboard!!

The 73N trips generally have fewer legs per day. There are a lot more longer legs, generating plenty of 1-2 leg days. Plenty of transcons, carribean, light South America, Central America/Mexico. The 320 has been converted mostly into a short-hop, multiple-legs-per-day category. So the question becomes, do you want to work harder (if you see it that way) in a comfortable cockpit, or spend long periods of time in a loud/cramped cockpit on the 737?

In all honesty, they are both great machines. I enjoyed the trips on both of them for different reasons. You really can't go wrong, but we have to have something to complain about right?!?

All of that said, the 88 SUCKED IMO. I have it placed below everything else on my displacement card, including the DC-9 and 717. I have seriously considered placing other bases (forcing me into a commute) above the 88 in my base just to avoid going back to it! Definitely the hardest working plane in the airline - again including the DC-9/717.

The 73N has a lot more of the nice long transcon legs. Much easier to get the 4 legs in 4 days sort of gentleman's flying on that category, even easier than the 757/767. Plus they get all the boutique deep Caribbean flying. However, I felt like I had flown 5 legs because of how uncomfortable (cramped and loud) the cockpit was.

The 737 Cockpit is the worst. I was more comfortable in the 88/90 than the 737. Regarding the quality of the 737 trips I would stress that trips/bid packages vary from base to base.
The LAX 737 trips blow, unless of course you like red-eyes and 30 hour layovers. However, I think the 737 trips will slowly improve. As the 900s come on line the fleet size will almost double. With that many more segments the trips should get more efficient and options should increase.
Finally, for new hires if you can get on the 737 you should steadily move up as the fleet increases. There will also be people coming in above you on years 2-3 for the pay bump but the category is steadily growing.

In 1981, the air traffic controllers went on strike, Delta stopped hiring.
In 1991, Sadam invaded Kuwait, Delta stopped hiring.
In 2001, we had 9-11, Delta stopped hiring.
I guess there were no black swans available for 2011 so we may be over due.
But yeah, anything bad could happen, and if it does, I guarantee, Delta will stop hiring.

I hate it when those black swans show up, crapping all over everyone!

And the airbus blows that away... Only to be outdone by the 777.
