My point is, about every 10 years or so, another Black Swan shows up. We are overdue for the next one.

Feel free to speculate what that swan is going to look like, here, I'll start:

1. Emirates gets more access to our major cites and/or Cabotage gets approved.
2. We merge with Alaska.

In the quarter prior to the signing of contract 2K the company experienced the single largest drop in revenue in history. It was a cliff like drop. While 911 had a impact the real issue was massive over capacity combined with a stunning drop in revenue. The contract was signed ratified on 20 June and we were already into record losses. That quarter we lost 123 million. Prior to that we were generating profit margins higher then we are seeing today. Sadly the entire industry was on a giant buying spree and capacity went crazy. In short Delta was in deep trouble with or without 911.

The good news is, nearly every year that ends with a 5 the economy is usually on an upswing. 2015 is only a year away so unless another swan shows up we could keep hiring for awhile, not just for retirements but for the new 717's, A320's and 737's. (I don't dare say Growth out loud!)

And if you see a black swan crossing the road...hit it!

MikefromMT, can you explain your new comment on your spreadsheet? on your spreadsheet, what does "1 OTS per month" mean? I guess I am a little unclear on just how many flows are coming through from Compass, or I just can't make the math work. 30 month - XX compass = ?? OTS (off the street).

Plus they get all the boutique deep Caribbean flying. However, I felt like I had flown 5 legs because of how uncomfortable (cramped and loud) the cockpit was.

With the 320, sometimes I feel like I need a permission slip to go west of the Mississippi on fifi. 5 leg days? We do those! Up 6 legs? Done em! But, it's done in comfort. So... yeah...

SLC has both 320 and 73N on the narrowbody side, as well as 7ER.

None of them are bad choices, though... welcome aboard!!
That's the great thing about the 320. 5 legs isn't really tiring at all IMO. The overhead panel is so much better than the 737s overhead panel. Much less work to do, switches to flip, etc. I used to do 4-5 legs all the time when the 319 was doing the BOS-LGA shuttle, and it was easy peasy.

I flew the 800. There are a few switches to throw on taxi out and in. Probably takes 30 seconds each way. Never seemed like it was causing a big fatigue issue.

Probably not, but the 320 made this guy lazy. More lazy than he already was. Not good.

The 320 cockpit is much quieter though. That does make a difference from a fatigue standpoint.

It makes a huge difference from a jumpseater's standpoint too!

Last time I sat in the 737 jumpseat, I had to ask the F/O,

"Where are the electrodes I'm supposed to attach to my nutz?"

Ha! So true. This past summer I sat in the second jumpseat of a SWA 737. It was a 2:35 taxi out of LGA and 2:30 enroute. Pure torture. I got home though.

Just make sure it's not a short pilot whose car broke down!
