As far as permissive goes, three main points if you want to give it a whirl:

1) It is best to link the permissive right into your terminal leave.

2) DO NOT sell leave back. When you do, you're missing out of BAH and all that. I know. I know. That last project needs to be done... BL, the mil is going to do just fine without your services. Putting out your last TRP report is not going to save humanity. Focus on the needs of your family. Use that money for your transition if you can capture it.

3) Last, and most importantly. Your CC needs to read into and down with your plan. A quick note here. He cares about his problems...not yours--you are leaving. Present your plan and be able to mitigate training and backfill concerns. If you do, the boss will be a lot more amenable to giving to the flexibility to link up permissive and leave.

I was successfully able to do this when I retired. Good luck.

You guys are seriously overthinking PTDY. Nobody knows what you're doing except you. The government can't handle the most basic jobs it is tasked with, figuring out if you're at home watching TV or sleeping in INDOC is well beyond it's ability or GAS factor.

EDIT:

I'm sure all the guys telling you how you can't start INDOC on permissive are the same ones at Al-Udeid telling you about your mustache length, sock color, and reflective belts.

Proof?

I did indoc on ordinary leave, came back and outprocessed before sims.

Delta cares if you show up for class. Are you asking if Delta cares....or the AF?

I asked that question when I retired and was told no, you can use it to find a job not start one you already have. It was pointed out to me--as many have to you--that probably no one cares.

As I recall I was given a nicely cited answer as to why I couldnt. The reason I asked airlift for proof of his assertion and my recollection is that I can't find anything that says you cannot.

If you want to split hairs, you can certainly take 10 days ptdy for house hunting if you are "considering" a move to mecca

The reg is vague, but if you really felt you need to follow your inferred intent of the verbiage you could consider job training as a "retirement relocation activity".

I'm sure most are capable of doing some "relocation activity" while in INDOC. Are you allowed to eat while on PTDY? It doesn't say so in the reg.

Selling back leave is only a good idea if you're separating and transitioning into the Guard/Reserve... And plan on working that job during the time you would have been on Terminal.

Really? Oh well, I guess you can sit on your thumb and wait to start class. If I were in the same position, I'd start INDOC at the first available opportunity.

....or you have a class date and cant take enough terminal

...or you dont have a job and have a mandatory retirement and want/need the cash

...or

In general I agree its better to take leave than sell it back. But there are certainly exceptions.

I guess I'm bored, but indoc is not an acronym or some sort of military word made of bits of other words. It's just a colloquial shortening of indoctrination. No need to capitalize. That is all.

On topic, I think the 100+/month through training is a good bet after the holidays. Good luck to all.

I would say the most ideal situation is when you are able to time your DOS such that you are able to start indoc while on terminal. But I would say it's not a hard-and-fast rule that you should NEVER sell back leave.

My case is one where selling back makes the most sense. My separation date is 30 Nov, which I picked way back in July when Delta said to expect to class up end of August. My goal was to drop PTDY and terminal together when indoc started, but we all know how the pool got backed up. So for me, selling back makes far more sense then taking terminal. If you don't have a job starting immediately upon separation, sell back plus TAMP (available in a lot of cases) can be an option to hold you over for a couple months.

This whole discussion is the difference between the Navy and AF in a nutshell!
