Sad but true...
Unless you live in base. You can pick up on your time off...

Confirmed. Make sure you factor in crashpad, NYC food prices and transportation costs as well

Then why would the company be hiring and training as fast as they can manage if there isn't enough flying to get the new pilots flying? I get they need to have a reserve to ensure staffing but a 9 month reserve seems a bit excessive and costly. I guess I am setting up for misery because I will be requesting the 900 even if that means extra months of reserve. I just feel its better equipment and I hear the AC is much better as well, but I could be wrong.

I have no idea. I am an 900 NYC new hire from the first quarter of the year. I have to fly with a check airman next week, because I need an extension on my consolidation. My first month after OE, I flew 5 hours. The entire month.

Things were started to look better, because in September, I was able to hold a CNO line. Now those are gone, and I am back to being on reserve. I can't handle a year of this, so I hope something changes. There was supposed to a growth announcement in September, but it looks like that isn't going to happen.

It actually has me re-thinking coming here. I either hope for some growth and head to training or choose elsewhere. Makes PSA or even :gulp: GoJet seem appealing. At least there seems to be a good amount of flying for a new pilot in those airlines.

Well, one could always get typed and if things don't get better, you can go elsewhere

This is my plan, pick up on time off. I live 30 mins from JFK or LGA.

Very short-sighted in my opinion. Sure, the 900 is overall a nicer aircraft, but you’re gonna be off reserve and making money much quicker on the 200. You can even get out of NYC, if you want (who wouldn’t?)

After doing this for 2 years (and flying all 3 variants at a previous carrier), I’m so glad that I’m back on the 200. At the end of the day, QOL supersedes everything, and having FADEC and a better A/C does not come remotely close to being worth the additional 6+ months of crashpad and ready reserve for min guarantee.

YMMV though.

This stuff changes month by month. Everything in this industry is cyclical. Back last fall/early winter, the CRJ200 had longer reserve time than the 900 in nyc. June hires who finished 900 training in September had lines by December. Looking at the October bid pack, NYC 200 seems grossly over staffed in both seats (more reserve lines than lines). I would hate to be the low guy on that list right now, especially as 75% of the people senior to him are barely into their 18 month new hire seat lock.

The only sure thing at this company is nyc will forever be junior. Even ATL has been trending more Senior on FO side than MSP...no one would have suspected that last year.

Very good point. If I wasn't going to be commuting in to NY and I lived local that would be very different. Regardless though I am trying to fly as much as possible. I am all about getting experience, and upgrading.

Having flown all three variants what are the pro's and con's of each?

A friend of mine was hired in Q1, went through training in 11 weeks with two weeks off between events, went straight to OE after 5 days off, and consolidated with time to spare. This is on the 900. It can definitely be done. They were NYC based.
