Because empty seats are given to nonrevs in order of priority. Us at 9E fall behind Delta employees, their dependents, and retirees. So in other words, everyone associated with mainline Delta. You then get a seat after them. ATL are nearly always full, and have double digit nonrevs trying to make it on too. So that leaves you without a seat. The problem is it starts to overflow, although there is 12 flights, 2-11 will be oversold or filled with nonrevs. Might have a shot on 1 or 12, which is the case where I live

Rdu is a sort of a unofficial "mini hub" for delta and American. And that goes without saying, hub to hub flying is very hard to do.

The thing you want to look at is not how many flights there are, but how many open seats there are. For a week or 2 go on Travelnet and look at the airport standby lists for the flights you are thinking of. It will show if the plane left with empty seats or if it left people behind.
