Very doable once you are a line holder.

If you can't hand fly a couple of headings without a heading bug and/or an AP, while maintaining a speed restriction... Perhaps you should consider a different career. As a holder of the equivalent of a Masters degree in flying (ATP), you should be able to fly the plane no matter what happens. I mean, what happens if you call for AP on at 600', and it fails to come on? Will you just abandon the departure procedure? Of course not. Have the PM hit the FD button, getting rid of all those distractions, and fly a heading and an airspeed.

I've hand flown the Whitestone a bunch of times, if they are prepared it isn't a big deal, just fly the plane and balance everything. 'Hmm the other guy is busy with calls and twisting bugs, I'll wait a second before I call After Takeoffs'. Use the FD or fly raw data, both can be fine. Work together, CRM, cooperate-graduate and all that stuff.

I didn't realize there was such an internal debate. I've always just briefed the other guy "hey, I want to fly this AP off until 10, that work for you?".

Not really a rumor. Had a guy in my April new hire class (was previous pinnacle) that was a 777 driver at Emirates for while. Came back and was in upgrade class for the JFK 200 in August or September. If you have the time and are willing to go to NYC then you will get the upgrade. Most of the senior FO's are happy where they are at with either CJO's or are not willing to commute to NYC just for that 4th stripe.
