The reason for prohibition of facial hair is so you can get a seal on your oxygen mask. It’s a safety issue, not just a grooming thing.

Everywhere else in the world (plus firefighters etc), the mask works fine with facial hair.

Almost every study that has been conducted since the 80's (or actually I think early 70's when this myth first got released) has ended with the same conclusion.
"The report concludes that, “The policy was based on outdated research on obsolete equipment and testing on respirators not intended for aircrew oxygen delivery.” Ferguson adds, “We found no adverse effects on bearded subjects within the two parameters of our study.”"

I get his points, but he’s pretty petty about it. Maybe he should have driven the hour to commute out of Tampa or move to base. Learn how to pack a bag of nuts or spend 5 minutes in line at subway to eat in the cockpit. A 30 minute turn is plenty enough to say, “hey cap, mind if you get the walk around? Im going to poke my head up the jet bridge to grab something to eat.”

But do you really want to look more like the cabin crew?

Too bad that AC just funded a study that debunked that myth. It needs to come to the US. Facial hair can be professional. Look at Air France or KLM. They allow their pilots to have a bit of scruff.

I'd much rather see a policy that says "since we think clean shave looks more professional, we don't allow hipster beards here", instead of this pseudo-scientific mumbojumbo about oxygen masks.
I'm fine with banning beards, I just don't like when science is abused for that purpose

“In the fall of 2016, they placed participants with facial hair ranging from stubble to beards grown to waist-length in a chamber where they simulated altitudes from 10,000 to 25,000 feet above sea level.
The men wore two different models of mask supplied by Air Canada while researchers monitored their blood oxygen saturation levels and tested respirators for protection against carbon monoxide or toxic fumes in the case of smoke in the cabin.
"It was 100 per cent success," she said.
"We had no one fail the study, regardless of beard length."

This needs to change - either to accept the fact that it's just a thing of image and use that as an excuse, or stop using oxygen masks as the reason for it.
