I can’t stand this practice by HR. It totally contrary to everyone needed to support themselves let alone a family. Don’t know about you but retiring from the military I wanted to have a job offer BEFORE I stopped getting paid for my last one. Everyone I knew advised me to make my available date earlier than actual. Change it online after you get the call.

So you’re advocating they lie on their application? It may have worked for you, but I would not risk it.

 

I want a private jet and limo to take me to my box seats at the Superbowl every year......... but there's that pesky reality thing.

I bailed off AD, guard bummed with no health insurance for my wife and two kids for 8 months until I got an airline to call. While the retirement check might not be all someone needs and tricare might be inconvenient, stepping out the door with a military retirement is a far cry from that. Airlines are trying to fill classes and it's Fedex's prerogative to wait until they can get a definitive answer from someone rather than build a pool. It sure as hell isn't their job to sprinkle the way in rose petals between retirement and Indoc for everyone transitioning from the military. Maybe they'll change their policy if it appears to result in missing out on good candidates, but until then it's their sandbox. Misrepresenting one's availability is a sure fire way to close the door on FedEx for good.

I love hearing stories about the guys who were still on terminal leave when they started Indoc. Good for them. Not everyone is that lucky and expecting it is pretty ridiculous out here in the real world, IMO.

 

Yes, it’s FedEx’s prerogative. Doesn’t mean I have to agree with it. Fedex is passing up good people for not building a pool. IMO

Yeah, FedEx really likes it when you lie. And folks wonder why FedEx questions people about mil leave. It's guys doing this kind of stuff that hoses others.

 

For FX applicants reading this thread:

You can want, but then there is reality.

The only thing you have control over is to set a retirement date, and work everything else around that. Have a backup plan if you don't get that dream interview/job before your date comes around.

Lots of us have had to do exactly this and we have made it work.

Well, that was bad gouge...and for any applicants reading this advice, *do not do it.*

In summer '16 there was a rash of this going on, and the FX pilot hiring folks responded to it by having hard copies of applications both before and after the call...and those who fudged their availability dates were dis-invited to their interviews.

Albie posted about this on The Pilot Network, and maybe here, too, with more details back in July-ish '16.

The company knows about this practice and doesn't like it...and responds to it accordingly.

 

Ahh, yes, another fine quality of the Entitled Generation. It's OK to lie as long as it benefits ME.


It troubles me that military officers lack integrity.

FedEx REALLY DOESN'T like folks that lie! If you ever want a job here I wouldn't risk it ...

 

Integrity is not an MEL item

Our new pilot recruitment director came over from legal. All she did for over a decade prior to that job was be part of the team that was responsible for investigatin, discipline, and occasionally termination of pilots. That constant exposure to the 1% of our pilot group has to have an impact on how the rest of us are potentially percieved. It has to have been a tough, miserable job at times. While I do not think anyone in HR would be sympathetic to lying on one’s application, I think the current adminstration would be even less tolerant of any such ethical breaches.

I think most posters here have made it clear that was dangerous/bad advice.
