From talking to one of the base chief pilots, it sounds like you show up to PDX on the first day of indoc, they hand you the check, then they hand you the company ID.

As I understand it, management can't attach conditions to the money (since that would be an even more blatant violation of the CBA), so they're basically relying on the implied threat of badmouthing anyone that does take the money and run to future airlines.

So its legal to issue bad checks now??? If there was no contract signed, they cant just "cancel" the checks!

NOW, when the company is faced with hiring problems due to their lack of foresight, rather than taking the time to negotiate changes with the union, they just opt to give out a bonus in clear violation of our CBA. I'm sure the company did this after extensive consultation with their legal team, and it remains to be seen if it is even legal. That finding will take time, and the company knows it. They will continue to hand out the bonus while it is debated in court if that is where it ends up.

The "loophole" that they are using with these bonuses is that they are giving them out to pilots that don't yet work here, and as such may not yet be covered by our CBA. I'm told they essentially hand you the bonus check before hading you your badge saying you now work for Horizon Air.

Again, our union tried to build increased pay for new hires into our contract but was essentially told to shove it. This new contract was shoved down our throats amid threats to be downsized and have our flying given away to Skywest, which they've done anyway. People were worried about their jobs, so they voted yes to a contract that was supposed to be everything we needed to compete for the next 8 years. Barely six months later we were asked to vote on an amendment that gave all of us a paltry $.05/hour per diem increase (yes, a nickel an hour, you can't make this stuff up) and gave the company COMPLETE CONTROL over pay for year 1&2 (Maybe year 1-3, can't remember) first officer pay, so that they could raise or lower it as they saw fit without input from the union, and they wondered why we said no. Now they do this.

My understanding is that the bonus CAN'T be tied to any kind of a contract, as there would be no question that it violates the CBA. Bottom line is this: THE COMPANY SCREWED UP with this last contract, and they know it. It hasn't even really taken effect yet and the company already wants to change it. When we denied their garbage proposal that strips us of our bargaining power, they just violate it. Is that who you really want to work for?

It's also just flat out wrong for a year 1 FO that is already here to be paid $10k less than one of you guys that hasn't yet learned what it's like to work a 12 hour day, flying six legs in four or five different airplanes full of MEL'd equipment without ever having a break long enough to use a proper bathroom, eat a meal or wash your hands with running water. Not to say that all trips are like that, but they do happen, and they are happening more and more as the staffing problems get worse.
Great summary! One thing to add: 69% of the pilots here share some of the blame for voting "Yes" on that garbage CBA ammendment!

So I was just told that you guys don't have a clue what your talking about and that QX is the place to go right now... I can only hope she gets on here and asks you guys the ins and outs of this company bc she is dead set on applying at QX and very excited to fly the Q. I shared what info I had learned on here with her yet I am told you are all wrong... Just thought I would try to lighten the mood a bit and give you a chuckle bc her school says QX is #1 over everyone. If any of you guys fly to Belgrade anytime soon...maybe you can have a chat with her!!

There's always someone who takes it, hook, line and sinker. She can have at it, and in a year or less when she realizes she drank Kool aid, I won't be laughing, I'll be commiserating with her.

My understanding is that some new hires will get the E-175 in a couple months. I'm not sure exactly when, but soon. There may be SOME FOs going into the E-175, however we currently have a 4 year seat lock so most that were eligible to switch to the jet would likely be thinking more about upgrading. There are lots of senior Captains here that want the jet, so I would expect the senior FOs faced with either being an FO in the jet or a CA in the Q400 would choose the latter.

Our upgrade times here are around 3 years or less now I think, so the few folks that are eligible but that haven't upgraded yet are probably more concerned about where they are based than what equipment or seat they are flying in.

Since nobody really knows the future of QX... and since there is a large sum of 175's coming... Just curious to know what you all think the future holds in regards to these new planes, and the possibility of becoming Virgin's feeder airline with one plane or the other?

Considering the struggle they are having with their current feed it seems unlikely they are considering adding more.
