This is a safety/maintenance/management/airbus problem. I’m in none of those circles. Plenty of people in those departments who should be taking action. And the union (local and national) need to take a tougher stance on it. B6ALPA is silent. Today’s ALPA email is more acknowledgement of the issue but little action. Maybe at some point (after Unite makes some headway?) they’ll do more. It’s kind of like our on time performance. Someone will occasionally throw a new initiative out to help, but never really fixes the issue.

They installed HEPA filters in all the airbuses (small bandaid). They changed turbine oils (now it smells like magic marker kind of instead of dirty socks) tons less toxic oil. The maintenance procedure exists to look in certain areas for pooled oil (which would then get sucked up into the bleeds/packs). But once it’s in the system, it’s a very comprehensive tear down/cleaning and takes a lot of time. Sometimes the planes get a lot of attention, but there are a lot of repeat write-ups and the problem obviously doesn't get fixed. Oftentimes they clean some oil and just do engine runs, only for it to happen again later. 59 fume events in March. That’s 2 a day. Average is 5 a day worldwide. No, I don’t think the number of events has decreased. As awareness increases (especially with the new magic marker smell which a lot of people couldn’t identify as toxic fumes), more that would have gone unreported get reported. B6ALPA is supposedly making a committee to study it, but has been pretty mum. Airbus/IAE need a fix. Until lawsuits/deaths result and are positively linked to this issue, not much will change.

It was when they switched turbine oils (that came out in a few emails from the union and the company). Year or so ago? Apparently dirty socks smell is still a thing too on some of the events. Check the bluepilots fumes thread.

Got on a plane in JFK the other day and there was an overpowering wet dog smell. It was raining and we thought it was just wet carpet or something. The #1 had some perfumey spray she used to try and cover it up... point being, none of us were overly inclined to yell “fumes”— we just though the plane smelled bad. When we started the APU the smell got stronger and you could feel your lips tingle and very slight respiratory irration. Shut down APU, call MX, defer APU, #3 has headache and gets replaced. Huffer start, pushback, smell and irration returns, calls from cabin, return to gate, write up “fumes”, etc. When inflight sups came to plane, they remarked on the smell and how it gave them a headache and they were onboard for maybe 30 secs and packs were off. We talked to CPO, felt well enough to continue, got a new plane, new FAs and continued trip. Just because we weren’t taken off in stretchers doesn’t mean toxic fumes are a fairy tale. One short exposure may not be enough to cause noticeable symptoms, but what are the cumulative effects over years and years?

Airbus 4.5 years. And I’m on the committee that investigates these. And I was harsh and I’m sorry. But I’m far from ignorant. Much of my post was tongue in cheek. Avoid an aircraft because of a remote possibility of an event? Really? Better chance of getting run over in Kew while walking.
