most of us own our own tablets anyways, we should have a choice. It's funny, I'll pay for my own ratings, uniform, headset and luggage, but damnit an ipad is where I draw the line!

I do not want to be required to come out of pocket $1000 for an iPad, battery, and mount...but...

If people don't have a financial interest in something, they are much less likely to take care of it. That is always the problem with them giving us things like iPads. But, if it is required, I do think that we should be compensated for it.

It is up to management (and our Union maybe), and it doesn't matter what we say on here. If it were up to me, I would buy my own IF, and only if, they increased our "uniform" allowance to at least $650 a year and allowed us to buy iPads with the money. In 2 years, the iPads would be paid for with plenty of money left over for uniform needs. Also, after a few years with the company, I really do not need many more pairs of pants and shirts (especially because I take good care of my uniforms). I have more shirts than I could possibly use at this point already, and just replace a couple a year. Instead, I could use the extra money to buy another iPad and use it for personal things, or give it as a gift, sell it on eBay, or whatever the heck else I would like to do with it.

Again, this is just my personal opinion. It would benefit me more than just being able to use theirs, and is why I would support it.

If the company just gives us all iPads, we all know that some idiots will destroy theirs in the first week and demand another. Have you seen the condition that some of the new planes are in already? Some people are nasty and do not take care of things. They will ruin it for everyone else.

Condition of the aircraft is management's problem, aircraft cleaners have to do the job they are hired for.
But I do understand your point.

At United they still have two ship's sets of Jepps and company manuals in each aircraft although all pilots are required to have their company iPads with up to date Jepps, company manuals, and charged battery. At some point the ship's sets will go away but I do not know when that will be.

Spilling food all over the center console, disgusting greasy finger prints all over the PFD/MFD, sticky unknown substances on the shoulder straps, soda bottles filled with dip spit down behind the rudder pedals, etc... That is just pilots being disgusting because they don't care about the equipment or the other pilots that will fly after them.

I DO NOT think that we should be required to pay for our own iPads, but there should be a middle ground that keeps people accountable for keeping them in good working order.

Next thing you know, the company will want you to buy your own uniform. Heck, back in the 80s and early 90s, they wanted you to buy your own initial training.

I would've loved a 5 hour 4 day as a reserve/commuter. You don't break guarantee anyway. Might as well work the least amount possible. And if you are hoteling it you don't have to buy any.
