You guys need to get off your politically correct high horses!

OK I shouldn't have been so hard on the co-pilot but I do believe her lack of communication regarding the prop pitch led to the crash IMHO. Instead of being defensive to my comments and retort with insults perhaps we could move ahead and discus this prop pitch possibility....

Is it possible to become the captain of an airliner without knowing how to fly an airplane?

Mod note.

PEOPLE! Report such a post as the one from Solid State and then leave it alone. Quoting the offending material over and over in additional posts will only get your resposnes deleted too.

Hey, Solid State.

I am really glad you got to fly little airplanes for free in Canada. I get to fly little planes (not for free) in the US. I can't even graduate to modern airplanes with proper nosewheels as I am forced to fly antiquated tailwheel machines. That said, I have never flown a Q400. In fact, the biggest thing I have flown was an hour each of dual in a C310 and a Piper Seneca. That is why I generally keep my mouth shut around here and "listen" by reading the posts of others...that is kind of one of the values of this site to me. Your post and name calling of the FO were disgusting. You know nothing of flying a Q400 and were not there. Please refrain from calling out people that were significantly more experienced than you are. Nobody wanted to crash on 3407, least of all the pilots. Accident investigation is not about assessing blame - it is about preventing future accidents (oops - making a statement, back to "listening"). Although I usually listen here, your post was disgusting enough to compel me to speak - congrats.

This is not a flame but it is clear you do not understand how these aircraft work. Please research (google) constant speed props. The props being commanded to the position selected is SOP and required for landing. Thus to discuss your prop pitch possibilty is fruitless as there is no way it is the cause.

Since my previous post was deleted and I believe that this thread will be closed soon I will re-add what I stated before.

When the flaps are moved to 5 degrees the condition levers are moved to max or 1020 np. This is standard operating procedure and EVERY 400 pilot knows to compensate for this increase in drag. There was no need for her to announce this. Infact if you were REALLY new to the airplane the sudden deceleration and HUGE increase in noise is a dead give away.

So to discuss this theory further is not needed. Yes the prop increase led to increased drag, which in turn led to quickly decaying airspeed. Again this is Standard Operatiing Procedure and as such is not the cause of the accident. It's the same as saying that putting the gear down, increased the drag, which inturn resulted in decaying airspeed and that it is her fault for not announcing that she put the gear down when he asked for it.

Put the anger aside guys. Add to why this theory is wrong and let the thread continue.

You are going to be in for a very hard time at your first airline training program. That's assuming you get past the interview...they are pretty good at sniffing out applicants with your sort of attitude.

Your first turbojet sim session is going to be a real shock...it will be easier to recover from that if you are humble.

Maybe you want to start examining your attitude now...you have a few years before the airlines will be hiring anyway.

The accident had everything to do with a lack of attention given to airspeed, and nothing to do with propellor blade angle.
