Packrat,

Actually, I did do quite well, just not in the airline industry.

Glad it worked out for you. Too many pilots seem to think that all they can do is fly for a living. I contend that if you are smart and driven enough to be an airline pilot, you can make it in all sorts of careers.

This is the reason I wonder why people accept crummy wages/benefits just to fly for a living and then complain about it.

7500, No ATP, was going to get that with my OH upgrade, 5000SIC CRJ. Teaching high school math. I do miss flying but already make as much as most FO's do at regionals. Live in IND so Republic would be the only one I would consider so no commuting. I work harder now than I ever did at OH, but with holidays and summers off, I can't see me ever going back. Still check in with the web boards on occasion so I guess there still is a small chance.

Agreed, but I do fly for a living just not for the airline rat race. And, I had, and have today, the pleasure of teaching new dogs, old tricks.

Excellent! Being an old dog, I'm always in the market for a few new tricks. LOL!

No offence to the new guys starting out, but why should someone with thousands of hours and years of experience be paid the same as someone just starting out at his first regional gig?
This is the kind of idea I would expect a union to present so they can justify taking 2% of my paycheck. Wishful thinking I guess.
The reason would be solidarity, and you just can't have every single pilot paid differently. When it comes to contract negotiations, TA and finally ratification, you really need solidarity. Having pilots paid differently based on hours etc would certainly divide and conquer the group.

A better solution may be centered around all pilots finally sticking together to end this low starting and slow progression pay.

I know it can be seen as "divide and conquer" but honestly I think it better positions pilots inline with other wage earners...The unions wouldn't bite on it though, since limiting the individual negotiating potential better postures the unions leverage to the pilot group. As a guy who's watched new employees come in, making various wages as negotiated with the company and commensurate with experience lends to employees who are more satisfied with their compensation.

Another solution in contrast to the 12 to 20 year pay scale system in the industry is to shorten it to 2 years. The second year you max out as a Captain or a First Officer. The system is front loaded to top out the pay for operating the equipment regardless of years of service. Pay increases come from either an upgrade or a transition to a larger aircraft. In this system seniority counts where it matters like choosing which line you want to fly, vacation, aircraft type, etc. but the compensation is the same for doing the same job!

Thinking out loud here. What is there's a signing bonus at regional level that's based on previous experience?. Salary stays same for all new hires, and it will be up to company to determine level of bonus, not to exceed base second year pay. Now company can dictate if it is a pro-rated bonus based on 12 months of employment. There are lots of pros and cons floating around in my head right now, but I'd prefer to hear other's opinions. (BTW, should this catch on: this idea is trademarked by evilboy and his persona based on the personal information in APC's database about evilboy's identity............you never know!).
