Hiring Discrimination at Majors?

Here's the thing. The interviewing company cannot ask for proof. My father was second generation Irish, my mother was Native American/Mexican. I qualify as Native American and Hispanic, but look like the biggest potato eating Mick around. My sisters look like my mother and no one ever believes we are remotely related. I have never put that down on any application because I didn't want to explain my family tree, but I was told by a United SVP that they cannot verify it.

Absolutely you should, especially if you want a job at Alaska Airlines. While this story is old, it still holds true...
Once you're out on the line, you'll find your race/gender makes ZERO difference. The only people who care are the HR types that have to check the Equal Opportunity quota box.

We don't do "tribes" per say, we have Corporations that represent each region and I am a shareholder. I also have a Bureau of Indian Affairs card as well. I don't expect special treatment, but it is an important part of my heritage to me. Also, I don't want to come across as a tool bag because I have a small percentage of "minority" in my blood.
justdoingmyjob - I have no idea if they can ask you to prove it or not.
For my federal job the questions were asked but they SAY it is only for record keeping/demographics. In Oklahoma, if you are going to claim Native American status for the host of benefits afforded such claimants, you are going to have to provide some sort of proof of such status.
Good luck to alaskandrifter. Hope it works out for oyu in the end.

Uh, I'm 40 and was hired into 2nd AA new hire class. Thought I'd be one of the oldest in my class. Was exactly in the middle of age group.
But, FWIW, I did stay at a Holiday Inn before submitting my app.

Anyone experience hiring discrimination when applying to the majors?
Example, you're qualified, but in your 40's or 50's and the majors pass you over for a 20- or 30-something?
I've also heard stories that females get preferential hiring over equally experienced male counterparts at the majors.
Truth to any of this?

Academic history is quickly becoming a bigger part of the screening rubric. I think a lot of pilots fall into the trap of thinking that the more time they have, the better, when in fact anything past 3000 hours doesn't really make anyone more hirable.
Another previously ignored metric is community involvement. Volunteerism is highly desired. I'm willing to bet that a lot of you squawking about age discrimination have absolutely no community involvement in their background.
It's not just flight time – airlines screen off of so much more. Look at your apps, what is it that makes you stand out in a positive way? There are literally thousands of pilots who meet the minimum qualifications for the job you're applying for – why do you deserve the job over them?
You should also know that app reviewers using Airline Apps aren't able to see age, race, or gender.

Thats how all jobs work bud, sorry to burst your bubble. They can always hire with preference. What do you think the interview is for? To find out how well you fit in with the culture. Thats what.
If you are too old(maybe not worth the training costs, possible health issues), too young(not mature enough to handle tasks?), too much of a hard ass(not enjoyable to work with), too laid back(not enough of a hard ass), major TOTD everyday (nobody likes you) etc. They have the right to not hire you.
Why on earth would they hire simply based on flight hours/being qualified? Haven't you met a 10,000 hour + pilots who make horrible decisions and/or think they are hot **** and should be hired just because of their previous flying experience?
If everyone who is "qualified" has to be hired simply on past flight experience, then they wouldn't need interviews.
I got hired at my current job with 5x less flight experience than what the job ad said was "minimums". Simply because I rocked the interview, and fit in real well with the "culture" of the company.
The real world is not as black and white as simply being "qualified".
