1000 TPIC is nice to have, and probably will be needed to be competitive, but isn't needed to be considered. If you are a white guy, joe shmoe, with nothing really crazy outstanding on his app...its going to be tough to be looked at seriously considering there are 100's of guys that are identical. If you have been an intern, or your black, or you have a front butt, then you probably have a secured interview, and thus a job (unless you botch the interview).

Therefore applicants can easily find themselves overly qualified for anything less than the very, very top airlines?

He talks like it wont matter if you have PIC time. It drives me crazy when pilots dispense career advise on that basis (or fairytale). Eventually PIC wont be a "competitive resume" requirement, but until then, the difference will be that guys with turbine PIC will get hired first, followed by the rest. Just because PIC wont matter someday in the distant future, doesn't mean you should plan your career around not getting any.
For people contemplating career moves (of any kind), get your PIC to better position yourself for whatever comes next. You'll always be better off than the schmuck with no PIC.
