Quote: I may have missed this on the thread, but are they doing Sim during the recent hiring process. If so, does anyone have a gouge and what aircraft they use? Thanks!
Yes sim is required as a part of the interview. It will be any aircraft that is in the NJ fleet. They give you your sim packet the night before, which tells you the sim you’ll fly. Packet includes company call-outs that you must know for the sim the next day. You’ll hand fly a departure, steep turns, then hand fly an approach to land or missed. Focus on CRM and callouts.

Thanks for the reply!

Looking for advice from any current NJ pilots (or anyone really). I will have the NJ minimums to apply soon but all of my professional time is flight instructing, so no crew environment. I would have to invest the ≈$4k to do the ATP-CTP before sending in my app. Would that be worth the investment or would working at a regional for a couple years be a better idea to be more competitive? I am a late comer in my early 40's that flew off and on for myself the last 20 before becoming an instructor if that makes a difference. Thanks!

While you may meet the mins, it’s going to be a pretty big transition for you whether you go to the regionals or Netjets. The ATP-CTP may be paid for at the regionals but they will pay you less. Or you can purchase the ATP-CTP in the hopes of getting on with NJ which pays more.

I think other people have posted that NJ is still interviewing without the ATP written. If that is true, you can wait until you can get the offer and then buy the ATP written.

CT Basing
I received the offer tonight for an April class date, I’m very excited to get started! I am currently living in western CT, about 35 minutes from HPN and 1:15 from BDL. Is there anyone based at either of these places or who lives in the area who would recommend one over the other? I understand that HPN is a service hub and busy port of call for NJ aircraft and owners, does that make it a more appealing base? By more appealing I suppose I mean fewer Uber / rental car trips. I imagine being HPN based involves a lot of Ubering to NYC airports or TEB, vs BDL which I imagine is consistently going to be an airline flight to begin and end a tour.

Alternatively is it an exercise in futility to try to game anything and just take the base with the shortest personal commute? Thank you!

if you can’t find the any insight on this, I encourage you to try both. One of the perks of the job is being able to switch bases every 7 days. I’d probably start with the shorter drive.

It depends on what is important to you. If you want to fly more on your first and last days, HPN will probably get you more flying and FDP. That may sound good, but there are many who drive way out of their way to get the airlines on day one and day last for various reasons. Not everyone wants to work hard every day. The airlines are often the worst part of the job, but at least it is easy to sit around in an airport or on an airline and decompress. I would probably go for the easier drive personally, but if you are getting your behind kicked on a regular basis, you may opt to switch things up. Congratulations on the job.

I agree with jtf…the airlines are the worst part of the job for me. Unfortunately, I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum to you. I almost never have the option to start/end a rotation in base. As busch said: Start with one then try the other for a couple of rotations and see what you think. Then report back here…

And CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congrats on getting hired! I agree with the others, start at HPN and see how you like it. You'll get a lot of limo rides because they won't assign a rental car into the NYC area but you'll also start/end more trips at your base. That's very nice, especially finishing a trip at your base but then you don't get as many airline miles.

Get a good e-book reader for the limo trips.

The airline part is the worst part and the best part. Whenever I get into the grind with the cattle cars I am reminded the airlines are our best marketing tool. Job security for the Fractional/Charter industry.

Absolutely true statement.
