Just curious, is there an advantage of being referred by someone, especially through a message board? Does having an internal reference in this case give the applicant some sort of preferential position?

I too, have been approached by a few wanting to "pass on" my resume as a "favor" offering me bonus freebies on the side....

No. None. If you're qualified and you don't give them any reason to think you won't make it through training, you'll get an offer. It's yours to lose.

They changed the requirements now for the referral. The referral must be submitted more than 30 days before the person applies for the job. Most people have just given up on it now.

So that's why I haven't seen him post.

Negative. You've got to submit the referral before someone applies, then it's valid for 30 days once you've submitted it. Also, the person you've referred needs to put your name on the online application, otherwise it doesn't count.

There is a difference between a recommendation and a referral. One you are vouching for someone, the other you are not. But if asked all it is is someone online who answered questions for you and helped you decide. Nothing wrong with that.
