Junior captain, which is DTW CRJ is 2500ish. So, 1500 FOs in front of you have to get out of the way, either by A. upgrading, which requires 1500 captains to leave/get fired/retire/lose medical or B. Moving on to another job. 1500 pilots is a lot. The only other way upgrades stay at 24 to 36 months is to add flying. Which is predicated on getting new contracts and the bigger challenge, hiring enough new pilots to expand the seniority list faster than the current attrition rate. I will be surprised if I upgrade in 4 years. But you never know. If attrition stays at 60/month. A new hire could upgrade in 24 months. If the recruiting and training. Department can keep up. Upgrade time is a living breathing document. It's always changing.

Keep in mind that not all those will take the first upgrade. I large percentage wait until they have a better schedule, or their base has openings. This means they get skipped, and the next junior guy gets to upgrade. We probably have a few hundred FO's that can hold captain positions, but choose not to.

I'll take the optimist's position here and remind everyone that the exodus to the majors is still spooling up. Hopefully no regional will be able to keep up with that attrition and we'll all get to go to mainline :D

Especially with summer flying starting to wind down, the training centers will be gearing up once again for the fall.

I'll drink that half full glass of yours and say there's going to be a lot of movement within the regional ranks here shortly.

I bet that many of our captains already have CJOs and class dates but have not announced it yet to the company until their time cometh in the fall.

I just counted, out of curiosity.

Amazingly enough there are 588 FOs (give or take 10 or 20) who are more senior than the most junior CA just awarded. Given that we only have about 2000 FOs, that is a pretty large percentage.

Tells you something about life on reserve, or life commuting, or life commuting to reserve that nearly 600 pilots have bypassed upgrade to be able to hold a schedule they want in their home base.

I hope so! This month's bid went way senior for CRJ CA in my home base. Would be nice to see those numbers improve.

My beard puts me in that group.

Of course you couldn't. No talent. I'll be well out of here when you and the others who couldn't get out finally realize it's your fate to be a lifer and then it will INDEED be poetic justice. Yeah. Upgrade isn't far off and even with some serious cutbacks in flying on the way, I'll be out.
