I love that UAL has that provision.
Also, if assigned a non-contractually compliant seat and it isn’t fixed you can still choose to take the assigned seat. If you do you’ll receive a banked first class seat to cash in at a later date on a flight where you wouldn’t otherwise be contractually entitled to a first class seat - Like a deviated deadhead (we still get positive space if we deviate, just not first class) or to and from long term training.

We do have a carve out in the contract for deadheading on the CRJ-200 which doesn’t have first class or economy plus seating. It’s a tin can full of seats of equal misery.

I would think there is a very good chance that by the time our next contract is ratified Southwest has a genuine premium seating option. So I expect this to be a priority, and whatever SWAPA is negotiating now must lay the ground work. Our peers have already figured this out so there is no reinventing the wheel needed.

Yup! I’ve done it many times. We have to be seated in at least E+ if we’re in the back. Regular economy we can refuse. If we take the illegal Econ seat we can get a credit to use for a first class upgrade when we normally wouldn’t be entitled to it (DH deviation or some training travel). If we are in an assigned middle seat (we can’t move ourselves there) we get a 50% override for the scheduled flight time as add pay. Honestly the only change I’d make is the ability to refuse the middle seat assignment or take the add pay. I did a 4 hour middle seat DH not long ago. It was torture. But as long as the middle seat is in E+ it’s legal.

I’ve never called the FODM. Just depends how motivated you are to make the DH.

It’s SWA. Of course there’s gonna be reinventing of the wheel! Are you kidding me?

Apparently as of now, SWA pilots being charged money for “premium” seats (forward of the wing or seats with extra legroom) on mandatory deadhead flights - including to/from required training events. This is what you get when we continue to elect entrenched leadership who rarely fly and have lost touch - and appoint committee heads with corporate ambitions - AND! Not to mention the 93% of us who approved a contract with obviously massive holes in the language because we were bedazzled by “rates,” “retro,” and SWAPA saying it was GTG.

Next “bite at the apple”? Probably 2032/33, given SWAPA’s and the pilot group’s aversion to pushing the company and operating as an actual organized labor organization.

So, what basis does SWAPA have to be optimistic that SWA will take care of the internal customer. Charging pilots for upgraded seats on DHs? No sitting in front of the wing unless we pay? SWA has lost its mind and SWAPA with them! I’m telling ya, the company vs union is an exact duplicate of Ds vs Rs. All theater, they all get ahead, we get kicked in the head.

It’s insane they’re trying to push back against us having something as simple as an okay deadhead seat. Frankly it’s embarrassing for a company who wants to be on the same level as a legacy. I was RJ scum and I was treated better on dead heads. It’s a guaranteed fatigued call from me if they want to play this game.

yeah I really liked that part. "We filed a grievance 3 months ago and the company has said nothing, but we feel they'll do the right thing"
Are we getting close to replacing SWAPA?
Its getting a little ridiculous
not SWAPA entity but those running it
