Just a data point…
leaving DEN yesterday, I talked to a person on the shuttle from UAL TK to KDEN(DIA)…that person had just interviewed with 3 other spirit pilots that day and told me that 4 from that persons newhire class from 7 months ago had already left…3 to UAL and 1 DAL.
Is this bad intel? Admittedly, I had just finished my Captain upgrade checkride and wasn’t totally hearing everything this person said during our 5 min conversation from our drop off point to door entry into the terminal.
I thought all was well on the spirit wings front….

I interviewed at a legacy last year with 2 other NK pilots. 5 nk pilots in my legacy NH class. I know of 3 more from earlier in the month I was hired. I think that's real intel you heard. I just saw a NK CA post he had started at a legacy. There's some movement happening forsure.

I wouldn't say things are not well here, but in terms of pilots leaving, we are struggling because there are not enough reasons to stay. If you were in DEN, they most likely were commuters to LAS. If they could get hired at UAL that would be enough of an improvement by itself to be worth it. We just need to improve a few things in the contract and I think we could be competitive again.

The thing is, even if our compensation matched Deltas, we would still have people leave. There are a lot of things we don’t offer, intl flying, larger base structure, the “prestige” of flying for a legacy. (I personally DGAF but some people do.) I’m not leaving, but certainly don’t fault anyone for leaving (or staying). Our Upgrade is longer than every legacy. Somebody mentioned the junior CA schedule at a legacy might be brutal, but it isn’t exactly spectacular here either, the difference is they are making more money and have thousands of retirements ahead of them.

Yup. Junior reserve CA at Spirit is probably one of the worst gigs out there. Honestly. No drops, no line holder rights once assigned a trip (as in you can be sent back out at the end of the trip if RAP days available), little control over days off and Rap period, no open time pickups, having to check out, etc….

Reserve rules definitely need major improvement. I didn’t like it pre contract, can’t even imagine doing it for years current rules. And bypassing isn’t the answer, some of us will have to do it, so it needs to get fixed. I hope the company got over its little power tantrum taking it all away, because it didn’t like the way we played chess. It’s in their financial interest too if reserves can drop, if the grid is “too” green. Also giving people the option to put RAP over days off should be worked on. Just because DAL doesn’t have RAPs assigned until later doesn’t mean NavBlue can’t be programmed to work better with our contract.

reserve sucks anyway you slice it at any airline. It’s just part of our industry. On the plus side during slower months you can get a lot of time at home if you live in base. Commuting to reserve is hell no matter what rules you make. I did it for almost 4 years at a previous airline.

I think dropping from the outside in and/or only one block per month would be a pretty good compromise.

The transition reserve rules between checker boarding and the current no lube at all system seemed like a fair compromise. I would use that as a starting point.

Life isn’t terrible as a junior Spirit CA on reserve supposing you live in base. Or perhaps they haven’t managed to call me much out of sheer luck or awareness of my competency issues. I’ve talked to the boss about transferring to hold a line in Florida, and then playing the drop game and she’s against it.

I slept 22 and 26 nights in my own bed the last two months during the holiday rush. So I see her reluctance to play those games at this point.

I did start updating apps last night for the first time in years. They will bury this airline if they think they can wait to improve things through 3-4 years of negotiations l. So I’m starting to hedge my bets.
