Putting new hire FO’s into a base where they can’t get people to bid captain would upset the staffing balance. They don’t really have that problem in IAH.

seniority progression on 73 EWR has pretty much ground to a halt (until MCO opens and 80 FOs move out of that)

because the company needs Captains and there are a lot of people willing to be a 737 Captain in IAH. They are about +200 CAs right now and need FOs ASAP

Hey guys, I am trying to get LAX as a base. Would prefer to do it on the 73 but would not mind the 75, and after that 320. Do you think bidding the 73 in IAH would trap me there or would I be able to bid out relatively quick. I understand that is probably a tough question to answer but trying to get a game plan before showing up next week.

You'll be able to bid out immediately

Should be pretty quick on the 73. Depends on the timing of the next vacancy, but you shouldn't have a problem getting it within a month or two of finishing training, I'd guess. For what it's worth, LAX 737 FO had 49 unfilled positions on the last vacancy, so they may start offering it to new hires again soon.

Youll have LAX by the time you finish training
so bid what you want, you’ll probably get it

Immediately might mean before you finish training to some people, which isn’t necessarily the case. The realistic expectation is being able to bid out within the next few months on a vacancy bid and then actually moving to the new domicile on the activation date. That also assumes that not everyone above you is trying to do the same thing (which is realistic IMO).

All that being said 5 months is probably a realistic target.

Agreed, I gave a lazy answer. it definitely just depends on timing of a vacancy with his/her class as others have said. Let me rephrase with just as lazy of answer lol:

"You will be able to bid out at the first opportunity"

Best of luck and welcome 👍
