“Right now anyone that finished probation can fly Captain in any base except LAS and MCO.”

There’s still one unfilled Captain spot in LAS on today’s snapshot. Remove LAS and insert GUM and CLE. ( I know, I know….those go without saying )

Right now anyone that finished probation can fly Captain in any base except LAS and MCO. Plus in 2023 when we are getting 2.5 new planes a week and 2024 when we are getting 3 planes a week it’s just going to be a mess trying to fill Captain seats.

We need a solution for this. A new contract would help for sure.
There, fixed it for you. The company can open new bases from here to Tim-Buk-Tu but nothing changes with the unfilled Captain slots until there are drastic changes to reserve rules.

Crazy times indeed.

The junior pilot gauranteed a line as a EWR 777 FO for January is 14499 on the seniority list. That seniority was hired in summer of 2022!!!!! So took a whole 6 months of seniority to become a 777 line holder. I would have bet the value of my 401K that the time to hold a line would have been measured in years, but the movement we have currently continues to blow all the convential wisdom we collectively have right out of the water.

I imagine it won't be long till we see similar progression in SFO as we are sending more and more niw hires there and continue to have more unfilled assignements.

6 months to hold a line on the 777 in EWR? Are you serious?

Holy cow...

I imagine to hold a line on the 756 would be similar then...

Ironically right now it is actually longer, that is what these crazy times have created.

Such crazy movement and training guys as fast as they can to keep up. The 756 was so far behind on training capabilities and catching up on re-qualling guys on the 764 that they couldn't train new guys, whereas the 777 has been just pumping guys through.

They parked the 764s during COVID and most everybody lost their qual. Per an agreement with the FAA they had to get everybody re-qualed on the 764 before the end of the year. That meant getting all the current 756 pilots a 764 sim refresher and then a bunch of LCA time, as every pilot needed 1 764 leg with an LCA to complete the "requal". They finished everybody by November and are now catching up on delayed OE. I think OE is about caught back up to a more normal flow so now guys are getting OE shortly after finishing their sims. Should see some pretty fast movement on the 756 now as well.

Thx for the infos, buddy!

So, looks like then a new hire on the 756 in EWR can expect less than a year to get a line.

There is a vacancy bid open right now and we get "snapshots" of what it would look like based on the current bids pilots have in the system. That shows 80 unfilled 756 FO slots in EWR, which would then all be given to new hires (theoretically). So, that would cover basically the entire reserve list for EWR. So anybody that already has that assignment on the property would move up by those 80 numbers as a minimum. This vacancy bid has an effective date of next May, so theoretically all 80 of those folks would be out on the line by then, meaning anyone hired this month would potentially be a line holder (or very senior reserve) by May/June.

They are talking about 2500 new hires for 2023, so I think it is safe to say (barring a black swan type event) the insane movement we have been seeing lately is going to become much more of the new normal. If we get the much needed imporvements to reserve then the Captain juniority may disipate somewhat, but with all the planes they have coming I don't think reserve improvements are going to change the fact that folks will be able to get a Captain bid extremely quickly.. Maybe not in a year, but I bet even with much better reserve rules the Captain upgrade will still be available much faster than at any other time in our history.
