Default New Hire Captains

At 350 hours they start getting Captain pay. At 500 hours and off of probation they will upgrade to captain. It is possible that the company will waive probation have them upgrade from FO to CA at 350 hours but it does not seem likely at this time unless the company gets desperate. Essentially they will serve as FO for 12 months then upgrade to CA.

Has anybody thought about how having more junior Captains will affect a potential furlough?

Would they furlough the bottom, say, 15% of the seniority list regardless of CA/FO status, or would it bifurcate based on position? Probably has never been an issue before, but I can see it being one now given the unprecedented nature of having NH CA (yes, after 500 hours, etc)...

Can't go off anything other than seniority. Plus, the company would love for this to happen. With a bunch of junior captains, there would be a good mix of captains and first officers being furloughed which would actually make it cheaper to furlough than usual. Not only would they quickly get rid of expensive captains, but the training costs associated with reshuffling would be lessened.

Ironically, if there were a significant furlough, they might have to train more moving to the left seat than displaced to the right.

For the guys joining from Emirates, Eva, Cathay, Qatar etc who most likely will be older therefore senior in the new hire class, can they bid for CA even though they may not have 1000 hours 121 time? Or must one first have 1000 hours 121 time first to be able to bid for CA?

1000 hours 121 time is a FAA requirement, I’m not sure if there’s any equivalent conversion for foreigners

There isn't... It has to be 1000 121 or 135 PIC time...

So I guess the question is, if a pilot joining United doesn’t have any part 121 flying (dual citizens pilots who may of been flying in Mid East, EU, Asia their entire career etc) if senior in class, if awarded CA, the company will have to wait till the individual has 1000 part 121 which could take 2 years. Or to be eligible for CA, one must have the FAA required 1000 hours 121 time already?

You have to be otherwise qualified to bid, meeting the hours requirements of FAR Part 121.436. It isn’t just 121, but 135, up to 500 hours of qualifiable military time and some part 91 operations.

If you have only flown for a foreign carrier, then no, you couldn’t bid it.

That’s correct. I know of former widebody CA’s from Cathay, Emirates etc here with close to 20000 airline hours which count for nought. They have to do 1000 hr at United to upgrade.
