Would like to know the whole story. If he lived in a DAL base and has been mulling this decision over starting over, and this new contract made him realize it's now or never, then that's one thing. Other than that, it sounds like he is not playing the long game like most people in the world who can't see more than a week ahead of them. Sounds like it could be self inflicted as well with an early upgrade. As a 4-year CA, he is likely on RSV or a bottom lineholder getting bad trips, possibly a commuter too. There is always more to the story.

I think what happens to a lot of guys is they hear all the good their friends talk about airline X and how much better it must be than where they're working. I am not military, but I imagine all the good gets hyped up in these "units" and makes the outsiders feel inadequate. Also, a lack of experience in the workforce can make one have unrealistic expectations. I have flown with many pilots who have done nothing than fly for work since college. While it's great to have known early on you wanted to fly, it also limits your view on how bad others have it.
Like others have said, politics and "ineptitude" are everywhere, in the good and bad times, but get more attention during the bad. I am frustrated too that a deal hasn't been done, but it takes patience and solidarity with other pilots to get it done. It will happen, but throwing in the towel by leaving or accepting inadequate offers is not the way. Complaining on here will do nothing but stress you out.

I think that what some also fail to look at is “culture”..
United’s Culture has always been very different than Americans and Deltas. Not saying one is right and the other is wrong- just different.
United’s pilot group and been kicked to, and while on the ground, from 2001 till the merger. Continental had a pilot group that was dictated by SCABs and pilots who on one day “worked” for the union/pilot group and then went over to management after the contract was signed and still wet!
It can be argued that between 2012-2013 things weren’t great but (in my opinion) under Oscar, a shift had changed and we started to trend up! Unfortunately after 2018 that trend started to level off and has since started downwards again.
If this guy left at the 4 yr mark, I wish him well. Maybe he did some soul searching and realized that being hired in 2019 hasn’t turned out to be what he expected. Maybe he talked with his squadron buds (every Guard/Reserve Unit has numerous airline pilots) and decided its now or never.
After yesterdays union email, I expect a nightmare this summer both operationally and from the union.

even if we got a deal next Friday (which I no longer think is possible)…
none of what I’ve said for 20+ years will change.
Only difference would be

My Dad lives in Walnut Creek. Easy BART ride. I wonder how many Delta has hired in 4 years. If that guy wants to live anywhere in California, he is fricken nuts to be considering leaving for Delta. At one year, hell yeah, move to Salt lake. But moving down 4000 numbers, no way. His life will really suck. He sounds like a whiney b**** that will probably stay put.
Your management wants nothing more than to keep your reserve rules worse than most regionals. To be honest your global reserve is essentially slave labor as you’re essentially on duty the entire month except for 2 days. Your commuter policy sucks too.
The guy who left after 4 years probably read our contract at DAL, then read the NC emails and realized your pilot group is making little progress fighting for QOL gains we had in our previous contract at DAL.
