The above communication #10 was the last one I received. Have there been any more since? Thanks.

From Communication #11 (9/23/11):

Since the last communication I have received a flood of phone calls and emails, all asking the same question; “what is the bypass rate!!!” I have been hesitant to provide this information because it is a moving number and has changed dramatically. With the first group of pilots we contacted, the most senior 100 on the list (and when I refer to the list, it is the furlough list that contains all pilots on furlough including the voluntary furloughed pilots), the bypass rate was approximately 4 to 1. This means we asked four furloughed pilots to get one furloughed pilot to accept the Continental position. When we moved into the second 100 most senior pilots on the list this bypass rate increased to almost 9 to 1. The jump was primarily attributed to the massive increase of pilots, in that portion of the list, that had military commitments. This drove the need to send out the additional 150 letters. We now stand at 350 deep on the furlough list and that person had a United hire date of 10/19/99.

Continental has been closely watching the response rate with this last round of letters. The decision has been made to send out another wave of offer letters to the next 250 pilots on the list. These letters could go out as early as Friday, September 23, 2011. This will get us 600 deep on the furlough list and that furloughed pilot had a United hire date of 2/21/2000. This should fill the classes at Continental through the end of the year and there are 3 classes in November and two in December. Once the last class in December has been filled, there will be approximately 103 slots still available under this current bid for 2012. As a reminder, the classes in 2012 will increase to 16 pilots per class.

Well done Cadet Driver,

Indeed I believe this is the email we have all been waiting for, from which finally some insight into the bypass rate and a barometer on the mood of the pilots to accept the "recall".

I must say I am actually surprised they are sending 600 letters to get possibly only 75 takers, but I fully expect the bypass rate to drop significantly as they get out of military guys and down towards those that have little to loose by accepting the recall.

Either way, even if the bypass rate drops to 4 or 5 to 1, they may very well get well through the furlough list to find the 178 they need.

Isn't a vacancy bid due in January as well? Wonder what chances are there will be any vacancies on it? Knowing how tight the schedules are, probably not much but every vacancy is welcome.

Jump in folks, dare I say for once good news?!!!

If this is good news, then someone ****ing on my head must be rain.

Good news is a JCBA that drives recalls to UAL, not this crap sandwich to Newark. I know some guys need the J.O.B., but it still is not good news in my book.

It will be "good news" when UAL starts to recall UAL pilots and stop offering them jobs at other airlines.

Well that lasted a few minutes...back to our regularly scheduled depression.

This is not good news because of WHO or WHERE is recalling...look beyond a little at recent events and you'll see some faint hints of interesting effects taking place in the direction this career will take when the global economy rebounds. The way I see it shaping up, United will one of many choices in the near future IF you are in the correct position and ready.
