I completely agree. I've had several j/s peeps lately having interviews coming up. Here or AA. All f/o never upgraded. And several = 6 in last 2 months. They all could have upgraded every F'n 1 of them.
There is also a 100% chance 50% or more were split tails.
HR is out there to make sure we are all safe though

I wish I knew what the magic formula was.

I know man. I got a buddy who has been waiting forever for a call. First to upgrade, spotless record, check airman, big volunteer for charity events around 10-11k hours and a dozen recs, can't get a call

Yeah, just the like the CA's that had to suck up the dark decade, and were possibly stuck at the bottom of the list with little or no movement. Or a a fairly "new" CA that sat FO for a long time and took the first upgrade. And is NOW sucking up the crappy schedule, "working hard" on reserve, or the aforementioned ACMI, or a fractional, or a foreign contract pilot, whatever.

No, I didn't.....however, it needed to be said. I personally had an express f/o in the jumpseat...she was talking about her upcoming Ual interview....said she has been a long time f/o for QOL reasons...could have upgraded several times, but wanted a good sched and days off.....so, yes I had to say it...
If you are a rt seater and have had ZERO opportunity to move to your left with multiple years of service, I could see some gray area there...if you won't move to the left because it's a bro,a q400 or some other reason, then I don't think you need apply at a major...jmho.

Just curious what makes a guys with 5k pic a better dmaker than and FO with 7k?

They want the total package not just a guy whose timing was better as for the last decade that is the difference.
And what about our captains that go on long haul flight without an APu. I knows it Mel able but is it a smart decision? Know of 6 in last 3 months?
Your making a generalized stereotype. Jmho!!

I have a family of 4 to feed and as long as I'm not crossing a picket line or contributing to the race to the bottom, I owe it to my family to work my ass off for a better life. It's not my fault I couldn't upgrade. I may never have sat in the left seat, but I made plenty of hard decisions when the guy sitting next to me couldn't. If guys think I'm less of a pilot because I never upgraded, I guess I'll have to live with that. I passed the type ride just like everyone else, and I'm happy to demonstrate proficiency at any time. United Airlines captain training should be the same for everyone. If they release you from the training center, they should be confident you have the ability to perform your captain duties. By that point, your background shouldn't matter. I am happy to be here and really doing all I can to make this operation the best it can be. It's a shame some feel those like me are less than qualified. I was hoping I left all that drama behind at the regional.

What about the 8 year RJ FO that has been making 35K since he got out of college, with a wife and 2 kids, that has had a bid in for upgrade on the most junior equipment in the most junior base since he got out of new hire training? It really irritates me when RJ CAs talk about "paying their dues" when they upgraded in 2 years or less at $70+ dollars an hour. Try making $35 an hour watching year after year go by wondering if you'll even have a job let alone upgrade. Guys like us have 2 choices: either sit around depressed and wait for an upgrade that may never come because it's "the right thing to do", or get off our ass, network our asses off, volunteer, get advanced degrees, get involved, and take our 8000 hours of SIC and make something happen. That's what I did and if guys are going to look down on me for it, so be it.
