Gloopy, you are bumming me out. I'm sort of excited about working for Delta and I'm sort of excited about flying a new airplane and you are taking all the fun out of it by saying the same thing that Justdoinmyjob already told me then telling me the same thing again in the very next post.
I get it. I have made a huge mistake and I will probably fail one of my many check rides while on probation and be fired or die of malaria.
I just thought sitting reserve in base would be nice...

If you are living in base, bid/fly anything you want. Me personally, I would tend to (and did) avoid a second long school in my probie year. If you are comfortable with maybe having to do it, bid what you want, want what you bid.

The guys saying you're likely to get displaced are probably wrong, and secondly our training is very straight forward.
Bid what you want. I did 2 training events when I was a probie (by choice- 88 then a couple months later 767), and it was not a big deal at all. If I was a noob, I'd be all over the 7ER. You'll get a plenty of repetition with the domestic trips and plus get some nice international flying occasionally.
I tend to bid more for the airplane... though I won't commute for anything except a moonshot thing like 777 or captain. You'll typically get a line if you want it when you have a month with vacation.

Did you say MoonShot and 777 captain in the same sentence? I like the sound of that.

Welcome aboard! You never know what may happen that's out of your control. Bid what you want and want what you bid. Don't worry about training, I went from FE to the right seat on the 727 during probation and the everybody at the schoolhouse was great. congrats!

The 717, as of today, seems to have commutable trips but they're a few hours short of what the 88 would do for the same number of days. The 717 has 13 hour 3-days with 4 hours of flying, I did a 717 4 day with 7 hours of flying and 18 hours of credit.
Right now if you'd prefer a lot of 4 days, the 88 is the place to go. Not many on the 717. That will change. The company won't let you have, as I do next month, a 70 hour line with 25 hours of flying for very long.
Here's the thing, you'll get at least a TOE in (unless I'm mistaken) and get to fly 2 international trips. So at the least, you'll get a taste of over the ocean international even if the remainder of the time it's all domestic. And it's the freaking 767. Can't go wrong. Go enjoy it for all that it's worth.

I can only speak for myself so take it for what it's worth. The 7ER appeals to me because I've already done domestic coast-to-coast and want to see if international is something I want to do long term. If I get displaced in six month, oh well. I also live in base and would choose to sit reserve on another fleet anyway so that isn't a big consideration.

Anybody here with experience as a junior guy doing the commute out of BOS or MHT to NYC?
I can sit long call out of home easily, but short call will require me to be closer.
How are the reserve rules? I know you're supposed to get 6 short calls a month max, but if you're short call, can you run your first/last days of a block to be commutable?
And for a junior line holder in NYC, are lines relatively commutable for a short hop like BOS/MHT?
