If for them it's all about profitability and keeping their share holders happy, then trying to remain one of the darlings of Wall Street will be a part of the calculus that influences what they ultimately do.
They are probably asking themselves, if this tight pilot labor market is really going to be a thing, do we shrink as needed, while continuing to milk the benefits of the old contract for as long as possible; or do we quickly agree to a decent contract, take a short term hit on our profits, but make up for it with strong future growth, due to the fact that we are able to attract and retain the pilots needed to support this growth?
AS is a VERY financially conservative company, so they love to build up big profits during the good times, so that even during bad times, they are still somewhat secure, especially compared to their industry peers.
They do this by being penny pinchers, paying as little as they can get away with for labor, goods and services, and it has been a winning strategy for decades.
They are LOATHE to change that mindset, so we will see if they eventually bend to the reality of the times, or they somehow continue to miraculously operate in the bubble that is so integral to THEIR philosophy of success.

Why change? This "pilot shortage" is another scapegoat for management failings, just like the unexpected winter snowstorm in Seattle and coronavirus pandemic. Drag it on as long as possible and save money and blame it on external factors.
Sorry we couldn't grow and expand like we wanted to because of a pilot shortage, which would improve pilot careers and job security - you don't need scope if we can grow.
Sorry we can't give you the whole soda can because of viruses, but we can give you this water bottle. Here, eat this same sandwich as a crew meal every day, because it is not made in the same facility that makes all the other airline food.
EDIT: I don't mean when the pandemic was real and happening.. I am referring to cutting amenities and services to save money, similar to certain hotels no longer offering breakfast. It's not just Alaska doing it.

I wonder what she’s saying to the pilots on the picket?

I think anyone who is considering working here should watch the video. While it’s impossible to know what the COO is saying to the pilots on the picket line. It does seem incredibly unprofessional, disrespectful and even a little creepy. This is how our senior management behaves. Any professional would have just ignored a picket line across the street. Our management has the lack of judgment and audacity to look in the eyes of every pilot on the picket line.

So is this some kind of intimidation tactic? Or is it just poor judgment?
It’s important for potential new hires to understand how senior management views the pilot group. This video makes it clear to me how their feelings of disdain and hatred for the pilot group boil over to the surface when they are confronted with something they don’t like. It’s also apparent that they view the pilot group like a bug they can easily squish. They resort to intimidation and humiliation rather than a respectful dialogue.
She wasn’t trying to intimidate every pilot on the picket line because she values them. If she could have fired every single one of them on the spot I’m sure she would have.
