It's sad but I think there will be a lot of people that continue to volunteer while their fellow pilots are on the streets. The union shouldn't have to put out any letter like that, people should know already. Hopefully, people get educated real quick on the right thing to do during a furlough.
I don't think there's anything wrong with informing the rest of your pilots (on an internal web board) who's helping themselves at the expense of others.

This happened at my last airline. Union couldn't say anything about it, as the contract allowed volunteers to pick up open time, but it didn't forbid the practice when others were on furlough. Thus, the union can't argue against something that's perfectly legal. (legal and moral are two entirely different things)

I was shot down repeatedly, but it wasn't for a lack of trying.
I would make it my mission to make sure that people that collect their 30 pieces of silver regret it. A little public shame goes a long way.

Ask a labor attorney about the effect of posting names.
I advocated for and, in fact, actively lobbied the MEC at Comair to do just that. I was a big proponent of posting names on our webboard and posting names on the union board in the crew lounges of those picking up open time with guys on furlough.

Prior to the publication of the hit list, the company issued a new seniority list. On the seniority list were the guys in the new hire classes who had not yet begun sim training. I was told this inclusion was at the insistence of the EXCO.
The new hires were on the hit list so they were furloughed IAW the contract rather than just cut loose. That is a little ray of sunshine, I guess, albeit a dim, weak ray that barely manages to shine.

in ground school new hires are given company IDs with employee numbers and thus seniority numbers so why wouldn't they be on the list even if they have not started sim training

Nothing like quitting a job you have probably been at for years to start over at Omni with the promise of new planes and growth then get furloughed before you even start the sim.
Wonder if the furloughs have anything to do with the rumor of a huge fine from the FAA over some check airman stuff?
